BROOKLYN, N.Y. (May 8, 2022) – The Baruch College Bearcats won its second straight CUNYAC/Pepsi Baseball Championship, defeating CCNY, 14-7, in game two of a best-of-three series at Maimonides Park. The championship series was broadcasted globally on Facebook Live.

Baruch and CCNY returned to the field following a thrilling game one on Friday. The remainder of the series was halted due to the inclement weather all weekend, forcing the series to resume on Sunday afternoon. With the victory, the Bearcats earn their fifth conference title in program history.

Baruch got on the scoreboard in the opening frame, fueled by a two-out RBI-single from Brian Hwang, scoring Pedro Tejada Jr.

The Beavers answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first. Michael Chasanov recorded a single to right field, scoring John Creegan. Later in the inning, Austin Ortiz rounded the bases following a Baruch error.

Baruch regained the lead in the third, led by RBI base hits from Robert Wakely and Luke Lombardi. The Bearcats plated another run in the fourth on a sacrifice fly from Tejada, scoring Joseph Cocozza.

Baruch broke the game open in the seventh, scoring seven runs on seven hits, fueled by a two-run single from Cocozza and a two-run triple from Tejada.

CCNY countered with three runs in the bottom half of the inning, led by RBI base hits by Jonathan Rivera and Tyler DiBlasi. Baruch answered with a RBI-single from Lucius Paradiso in the eighth, while the Beavers scored again with a RBI-single from Rivera.

In the ninth inning, the two teams exchanged runs, but the lead was large enough for the Bearcats, who secured the championship series sweep.

Matthew Lawlor went the distance in the victory, tossing a complete game with 10 strikeouts. For his efforts in game two and the play-in game on Tuesday, he was named the championship’s Most Valuable Player.
