NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Christopher Newport University (6-1) outlasted Virginia Wesleyan College (4-3) in an offensive outburst at Captains Park today, as the two teams combined for 28 runs in a 16-12 win for the Captains. Junior second baseman Matt Shoemaker went 4-for-4 and drove in five for the Captains and Greg Goldsmith recorded the win for CNU.

The two teams combined for five home runs and each team also posted four doubles on the day with 15 hits total. The Marlins got on the board first with a two-RBI double from designated hitter Mike McCutcheon in the top of the first inning, but CNU answered in a big way in the bottom of the second, scoring seven runs in the frame.

CNU's big inning started with Shoemaker's first hit of the day, a single into right center. Steven Keener followed with a double and USA South Rookie of the Week Billy Steel scored Shoemaker from third with a single. Shannon Mark, Luke Saunders and Ben Lenda each added an RBI single in the inning before Shoemaker capped the scoring off with a sacrifice fly in his second plate appearance of the inning.

A solo shot from Jacob Pierce in the next inning pulled Virginia Wesleyan back within four at 7-3, followed by a two-run homer from Ryan Estrella in the fourth to get back within a pair, 7-5. The Marlins would retake the lead in the fifth inning, scoring four runs on three singles to go up on the Captains, 9-7.

Christopher Newport tied it right back up at nine in the bottom half, as Shoemaker drilled one of his two doubles on the day to put two runners on with nobody out, followed by a two-RBI single from Keener. The back-and-forth affair teetered back in favor of the Marlins in the next half-inning, as the road team scored a pair to pull ahead 11-9 on another McCutcheon double.

The Captains would finally pull ahead for good in the bottom half of the sixth when Shoemaker took control and blasted a three-run home run over the left field wall. CNU would add two runs to their lead in the seventh and one more in the eighth to finish out the game with a 16-12 final.

CNU was led by Shoemaker's 4-for-4 day with a sacrifice fly, five RBI, two doubles and a home run. The junior and current USA South Player of the Week came into the game leading the team in average and upped his season mark to .520 with 15 RBI. Saunders, Keener and Connor Madden were the other Captains with multi-hit games. Madden punctuated his day with his third home run of the season while Saunders also launched a solo shot for his second of the season.

All nine Captains finished with at least one hit in the game.

Wesleyan was led by Pierce, going 3-for-3 with an RBI and three runs scored. Reid Hoffler was saddled with the loss, pitching just two-thirds of an inning and giving up two earned runs.

Goldsmith earned the win for CNU, pitching one inning of relief and allowing one run. Matt Verdillo and Ryan Fleischmann finished out the game, pitching the final 2.2 with five strikeouts, allowing just one base runner.

CNU will now hit the road for six straight games, including the USA South conference opener this weekend at Greensboro College. Game times are 4:00 pm on both Saturday and Sunday as the Captains travel to the Pride for the 2011 conference opener.
