CONWAY, Ark. (March 12) -- Hendrix College rallied for a come-from-behind win in extra innings over Southwestern University in Saturday's opener and then the Pirates survived another late Warrior surge for a narrow win in the night cap at Warrior Field.
The Warriors (6-8, 4-6 SCAC) trailed by one run heading into their last at bat of the first game. Junior Andrew Thames reached base with two outs and first year Austin Womack entered to pinch run. Womack stole second and took third when the throw down got away from the second baseman.
Junior Nathan Harr walked to put runners on the corners and first year Nick Richardson replaced senior Aaron Bowen on the lineup card. Richardson's grounder to third was too hot to handle and the error tied the game.
Both teams went scoreless in the eighth and Southwestern (8-9, 4-5 SCAC) put one run across in the ninth, before Hendrix loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the ninth. Richardson stepped to the plate in another clutch situation and sent a shot through the left side to score first year Jacob Perschke and then first year JT Bowen sprinted home from second on an error in left field.
Senior left-hander Jordan Suydam entered for the last two outs of the ninth to pick up his second win of the year. Junior right-hander Teddy Smoyer started on the bump for 8.0 innings, seven strikeouts and just two walks.
Saturday's second contest turned into a 7.0 inning feature since the opener stretched past the standard 7.0 innings. Hendrix trailed 8-4 heading into the bottom of the sixth and the Warriors rallied for four runs on five hits to knot the game. Junior Kyle Raskin tagged a two-run single to left, while first year Collin Radack and senior Jeff Forgerson collected RBI base knocks to the outfield.
Southwestern juiced the bases with just one out in the ninth to put two runs across on two hits and three walks.
Richardson entered in the fifth inning and tossed 4.1 frames in the loss. He struck out four, walked four and scattered seven hits.
Forgerson was 3-for-5 with three RBI, including a single, double and triple. Perschke went 3-for-5 with a double and Raskin was 2-for-5 with two runs and two RBI in the night cap.
