KINGS POINT, N.Y.—Senior David Giglio (Wallingford, Conn./Xavier) drove in six runs in the nightcap to help The University of Scranton split a Landmark Conference doubleheader against the Merchant Marine Academy Saturday afternoon.

Giglio hit his second home run of the season and belted his first double of the year as the Royals won the second game, 13-4, after being shutout, 2-0, in the opener.

In the first game, Scranton managed just five hits—all singles—off Mariner junior pitcher Andy Martin (San Diego, Calif./Point Loma), who struck out six and walked only one in picking up the complete-game victory. 

Martin's effort overshadowed a solid pitching effort by Royal junior hurler Rocky Sawyer (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty), who scattered four hits and allowed only one earned run, that coming on a solo home run by sophomore Dustin Thomsen (Alamogordo, NM/Alamogordo) in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Giglio delivered three key hits in the nightcap.  He belted a two-run double during a five-run rally in the third inning, smacked a two-run single during another five-run rally in the fourth, and drilled a two-run home run during a three-run rally in the fifth.  He finished with five hits today to raise his team-leading batting average to .474 and his team-leading slugging percentage to .842.   Giglio also leads the Royals with 13 RBI. 

After giving up two runs and two hits in the first inning, Scranton sophomore pitcher Robert Della Pollo (Havertown, Pa./St. Joseph's Preparatory) settled down and allowed just three hits and two runs the rest of the way to earn the complete-game victory.  He struck out seven and walked only one to pick up the first win of his career.

Senior outfielder Chris Stallone (South Plainfield, N.J./South Plainfield) had four hits, including three in the nightcap, and scored three times and senior Joe Amicucci (Pomona, N.Y./Albertus Magnus) and sophomore Tim LeCompte (Philadelphia, Pa./Roman Catholic) each belted a double in the second game.

The two teams will meet again tomorrow morning at 11:00 a.m. 

News & Notes:  Stallone is now batting .400 for the season and .408 for his career…Royals will open an eight-game Spring Break trip to Ft. Myers, Florida, on Tuesday, March 22, against The College of Wooster (Ohio)…Scranton has scored at least 10 runs in four of six games this season…Giglio has now driven in 109 runs in his career.
