LEXINGTON, Va. - No. 1/6 Shenandoah University continued its late-inning heroics Tuesday afternoon in a 5-4 non-league baseball victory over Washington & Lee.

Shenandoah (18-0) scored the winning run in the top of the ninth when sophomore Joey Donofrio doubled to right and advanced to third as the W&L outfielder mis-played the ball.

Senior All-America Greg Van Sickler then lofted a sacrifice fly to right to plate Donofrio with the game-winning run.

The Generals (10-10) forced SU into having to score that run by getting two runs of their own in the bottom of the eighth off of Hornets starter Brian Goddard and reliever Kyle Scallion (4-0).

Scallion allowed one run on two hits and two walks (one intentional) in 1 2/3 innings. With the bases loaded and one out in the eighth, Scallion induced a groundball and then struck out the final W&L hitter to end the threat.

He earned his fourth victory in the past six days by closing the Generals out in order in the ninth.

Shenandoah had taken a 4-2 lead in the fifth on a two-run HR by junior Cory Nelson. The Hornets had also scored single runs in the third and fourth innings.

Donofrio, Van Sickler, junior Tucker Brown and sophomore Kurt Krout each had two hits for the victors with Donofrio also driving in a run.

Joe Gannett (0-1) took the loss for the hosts. He allowed the unearned run on one hit in 2 2/3.

SU continues this mini-road trip with a non-league contest at Dickinson Wednesday afternoon. Senior Ben Hendrickson (2-0) is the Hornets expected starting pitcher.
