Pointers Sweep Doubleheader against St. Thomas
AUBURNDALE, Fla – The UW-Stevens Point baseball team picked up a pair of key early-season in region wins on Wednesday afternoon, posting a doubleheader sweep of the University of St. Thomas by scores of 4-2 and 9-0.

The wins were the first of the season for the Pointers against a Midwest region opponent and head coach Pat Bloom was proud of his team's effort.

"It was nice to see our guys come out and play solid baseball against a quality in-region opponent," said Bloom. "We were focused and ready to play right from inning one and we competed hard for all 14 innings."

Jared Surman plated the Pointers first run of the game in the fourth with a single and Justin Jirschele tacked on another run for UWSP in the fouth with an RBI triple. Dan Douglas then had the go-ahead single in the bottom of the sixth inning and Cody Koback followed that with an RBI single to push the Pointers in front 4-2.

Senior Joel Delorit threw 5.1 innings of eight hit baseball, allowing two runs and striking out four. Ryan Iverson picked up the win throwing 1.2 innings of one hit baseball.

The Pointers' offense exploded for 12 hits in game two, as Douglas and Koback tallied three hits apiece. Koback drove in four of the Pointers 10 with a two RBI triple in the second inning and a two RBI double in the fourth. Max Mittelstaedt finished the day 2-for-3 with a double in the fourth and a two-run home run in the fifth. Senior Jordan Rennicke also had a good day at the plate, finishing 2-3 with two doubles and a RBI.

Scott Williams earned the victory in the nightcap, throwing six innings of three hit ball, walking two and striking out three. Freshman Zach Wendorf threw a scoreless inning in relief, striking out one.

"I hope that we can build off this sweep and finish the trip on a solid note," said Bloom.

Seventh-ranked UW-Stevens Point (5-2) returns to action on Thursday, March 24th in the final two games of the Florida trip with a split doubleheader against Southern Maine and St. Olaf. The Pointers match-up with the Oles of St. Olaf marks another key in-region game.
