NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Behind a dominant pitching and defensive effort, the 5th-ranked Christopher Newport University Captains (26-1) dropped Salisbury University (10-8) at home, 4-0. The Captains scattered seven hits and earned their fourth shutout of the season. It was the 25th straight victory for CNU, marking the fourth longest streak in Captains history - all sports included.

Rookie starter Bryan Bierlein pitched seven shutout innings for the Captains and sophomore reliever Richard Lindsay combined for the shutout with two clean frames to close it out. Bierlein allowed a pair of singles to open the game, but got out of the jam and saw only one more runner reach third the rest of the day.

The rookie finished with a line of 7.0 innings pitched, 6 hits, 1 walk and four strikeouts. He improved to 4-0 overall this season in five starts.

Steven Lindemuth doubled in the fourth inning, followed by a two-out RBI single from rookie shortstop Billy Steel to put CNU on top of the Sea Gulls, 1-0. The Captains would add to the lead in the sixth, putting three runs on the board to round out the scoring on the day, 4-0.

The team's leading hitter, Matt Shoemaker, singled in the sixth, coming around to score on a Travis Medina single. Connor Madden followed that up with an RBI single and Chris McDougal added an RBI double for the Captains offense.

McDougal, who entered the game in the top of the second after an injury, went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Lindemuth and Madden each had multi-hit games for CNU.

Salisbury got three hits in four at-bats from Brad Baylis, but the Sea Gulls scattered just seven hits in the game.

The Captains return to action tomorrow as they host #16 Tufts in a nationally-ranked battle against the Jumbos at 2:00 pm.
