NORTON, MA- Wheaton College junior Dan Haugh (Andover, MA/St. John's Prep) turned in a monster day offensively during his team's 16-5 victory over visiting Westfield State University on Sunday at Sidell Stadium, as the third baseman's eight RBI came within one of a 12-year-old school record. For the game, he batted 4-for-5 with a career-best three doubles, a triple and two runs.
Winners in five of their last six games, the Lyons, who are receiving national votes in D3baseball.com's most recent poll, are 9-5. The Owls dropped their fifth straight game to fall to 5-10.
Haugh scored his first six runners on RBI doubles, with two crossing the plate in the first inning, one during the third and three in an eight-run sixth that blew the game open. He also legged out a two-run triple in the seventh for an impressive 25 RBI on the season. In the eighth, Haugh had an opportunity to tie or beat the RBI record as he approached the plate with two on and two out before settling for a four-pitch walk.
Lyon sophomore Dan Gusovsky (Andover, MA/Andover) batted around in the sixth, leading off with a base knock before making his way back to the plate to hit an RBI single. Senior Sean Munley (Ewing, NJ/The Hun School of Princeton) and sophomores Justin Connor (Arlington, MA/Arlington) and Sean Ryan (Norton, MA/Norton) also earned an RBI during the mammoth inning.
Connor broke the deadlock in the sixth, scoring Gusovsky on a fly that landed just shy of the diving glove of the centerfielder. With the bases loaded, Ryan reached first on a fielder's choice that failed to get anyone out, scoring a run. Wheaton tacked on four insurance runs in the seventh and another in the eighth.
After trailing 3-0, the Owls showed life in the fourth inning, roaring back to tie the game at three. Entering the fourth, junior hurler Frank Holbrook (Middletown, RI/Portsmouth Abbey School) retired nine of the 10 batters he faced. With runners threatening in the fifth, Westfield State senior Peter Hogan (Weymouth, MA/Weymouth) ran over Gusovsky at the plate, trying to beat the throw from Ryan in left field. Rather than a run, it earned him an ejection, and Holbrook escaped the inning without conceding the lead.
In addition to Haugh, three Lyons recorded multiple hits, with senior Eric Laliberte (Nashua, NH/Bishop Guertin) going 3-for-6. Gusovsky went 2-for-4 with two runs, Munley had two hits with two RBI, and Ryan scored four runs. Connor scored twice, while senior Hadi Raad (Hastings-on-Hudson, NY/Hastings) and junior Hal Landers (Salem, NH/Salem) posted two runs and two walks apiece. Sophomore Jordan Wylie (Plymouth, MA/Avon Old Farms School) picked up his first collegiate win, giving up two earned runs on two hits with two strikeouts and a pair of walks in two innings.
For Westfield State, senior Pete Grillo (Shrewsbury, MA/Shrewsbury) drove in two runs and drew two walks, while classmates Jeff Ackerman (Beverly, MA/Beverly) and Sean Geary (South Yarmouth, MA/Dennis-Yarmouth Regional) and sophomores Josh Blair (Westfield, MA/Westfield) and Alex Cloutier (Westford, MA/Westford Academy) each had two hits. Sophomore Connor Buckley (Acton, MA/Acton-Boxboro Regional) gave up three earned runs on two hits with one walk in one inning for the loss.
The Lyons travel to New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) foe Clark University on Tuesday for their second meeting of the season. Wheaton posted a 14-7 victory last Tuesday.
