Tiffin, Ohio – March 27, 2011 – Senior Nathan James (Rockport, Ind. / South Spencer) struck out a career-high 10 batters and his poise carried over on offense as the Heidelberg University baseball team topped Case Western Reserve University 15-4 at Peaceful Valley. The win secures a three-game sweep for the Berg over the Spartans and increases Heidelberg's overall record to 14-3. Case Western drops to 14-10.

The Heidelberg hitters showed confidence at the plate and stepped up to a two-out challenge on multiple occasions. Of its 15 runs plated, the Berg scored 12 of them with two outs on the board.

After Case Western scored a run in the first, Heidelberg answered with four of its own, but with the assistance of a Spartan miscue. Willie Brechun (Canton, Ohio / Canton Central Catholic) knocked in the first run of the game and with two-outs, and the bases loaded, a dropped fly ball in right field cleared the bases and gave the Berg a 4-1 advantage.

A two-out RBI single by Gar Keen (Sparta, Ohio / Highland) in the second extended Heidelberg's advantage to four runs, 5-1.

After three scoreless innings on both sides, Case Western found the scoreboard with two runs in the top half of the sixth. However, the Berg came back in the bottom. Ricardo Lizcano (Toledo, Ohio / Roy C. Start) had a two-RBI single to left field and Keen stepped up with the bases loaded and two outs. Keen doubled down the right field line to make it five runs in the inning and increased Heidelberg's lead to seven, 10-3.

Heidelberg followed up its five-run sixth with another five runs in the seventh to close out its scoring on the day. Two of its final five runs came with two outs and off the bat of pinch hitter Joe Staab (Bellville, Ohio / Clearfork).

James finished the day giving up nine hits, two earned runs, while walking one. He improved his record on the year to 2-1.

For the day, Heidelberg finished with 12 hits from nine different players. Keen, Elvin Williams Jr. (Euclid, Ohio / Euclid) and Andrew Buelow (Marysville, Mich. / Marysville) led the way with two hits apiece. Keen knocked in a team-best four runs, while Lizcano, Staab and Buelow had two RBI apiece.
