LISLE, Ill. - The Edgewood College baseball team snapped their five-game losing streak in their conference opener against Benedictine University. However, an Eagle comeback in the second game fell short and Edgewood College settled for an opening day split after a 4-3 loss.

Freshman pitcher Trevor Koehn turned in a fantastic Northern Athletics Conference debut performance in game one. Koehn limited Benedictine to three hits and no earned runs in 7.2 innings. Koehn threw 110 pitches, striking out four and allowing just one walk.

Edgewood College (6-7, 1-1 NAC) tallied runs in third and fifth innings to take a 3-0 lead, all of which were set up with a well executed sacrifice bunt. Ryan Walker doubled to right center to drive in Mitch Mogensen, who had moved to second on a Scott Ortega bunt in the third inning. In the fifth, it was Jake Zadra knocking a two-run single following a Walker sacrifice.

Benedictine University (7-8, 1-1 NAC) answered back with an unearned run in the eighth. Jack Holden doubled in a run with two outs to cut the Edgewood College lead to 3-1, but Blake Hunt relieved Koehn and induced a ground ball to get out of the inning. Edgewood College piled on three insurance runs in the ninth inning on a bases-loaded walk by Mike Selvaggi and a back-breaking two-run single by Andrew King.

The top three spots in the Edgewood College order, Ortega, Walker and Zadra combined to go 7-for-11 with three runs batted in. Ortega led the way with a 3-for-4 performance. Walker was 2-for-3 with a double, while Zadra went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs.

Edgewood College only managed four hits in the second game, but still had an opportunity to tie the game in the ninth inning. Benedictine touched Edgewood College starter Kyle Lode for four runs on four hits in the second inning. Zadra singled home Ortega in the top of the third to trim the Benedictine lead to 4-1.

Edgewood College loaded the bases in the fifth inning on back-to-back walks and a bunt single by Walker. Benedictine gave up one run in exchange for two outs on Zadra's double play ground ball and Ortega scored from third on a wild pitch to pull within one run.

Edgewood College put a runner at third in the eighth but couldn't bring him home and then had Ryan O'Dell at second after a leadoff double in the ninth inning. After a strikeout, Ortega lifted a fly ball to center field. O'Dell attempted to tag up and advance to third, but Benedictine centerfielder Mitch McMeen threw out at O'Dell at third to end the game.

Zadra was the only Eagle with two hits in the second game going 2-for-3 with a run batted in. Lode took the loss but Tony Ales and Jason Towns were strong in relief throwing 6.1 innings without allowing a run. Towns struck out three hitters.

Edgewood College was scheduled to play Aurora University on Sunday at Stampfl Field, but that doubleheader has been moved due to an impending thunderstorm in the Madison area. The Eagles and Spartans will instead play on Wednesday, April 6 at 3:00 p.m. Those games will be broadcast live on EdgewoodCollegeEagles.com.
