#1 CNU Sets Program Wins Mark with Doubleheader Sweep of York

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- With a doubleheader sweep of York College (Pa.), the top-ranked Christopher Newport Captains improved to 39-5 this season, makring a new program high for wins in a season. CNU won the first game, 5-4, and followed it up with a 10-3 victory in the second seven-inning contest. Matt Shoemaker led the way, smacking a pair of homers on the day.

In the first game, senior Sean Chitsaz pitched six strong innings, allowing just five hits while striking out six. He gave up three earned on the way to his ninth win of the season, tying Tab Pabst, Cliff Wester (2002) and Kenny Moreland (2007) for the third most in a single season at CNU.

The Spartans took a 1-0 lead in the first, but CNU answered with three runs in the bottom half. Steven Lindemuth had an RBI groundout followed by a two-RBI single from designated hitter Chris McDougal. York came back to erase the early lead in the top of the second and the game remained tied for the next three innings.

The Captains finally re-took the lead in the bottom of the fifth when Shoemaker blasted the first of his two home runs on the day. CNU added another in the sixth for insurance when Connor Madden singled home pinch runner Tony Adams. Sophomore closer Ryan Fleischmann pitched the seventh for his eighth save of the season, tying the CNU program record.

Rookie Bryan Bierlein tossed the second game and scattered five hits in six innings of work. He improved to 6-0, striking out six in the victory. Christopher Newport wasted no time in getting him run support, as Shoemaker launched a two-run home run to deep center field in the bottom of the first inning.

York came back to tie in the top of the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Joe Doyle, but CNU would pile on the runs over the next three innings. CNU scored one in the fourth, three in the fifth and four in the sixth for the final 10 runs on the board.

The Captains had five straight hits to open the fifth inning, led off by Madden driving a double to the gap. He would scored on a single by senior Drue Vernon, who came around on a single by Shoemaker after Shannon Mark moved him over to third with a single through the right side.

Shoemaker led the way offensively for the Captains, going 4-for-6 with three runs scored and five RBI, while Saunders also went 4-for-6 with a couple RBI. Senior Travis Medina launched a hard-hit double to the left field wall in his final regular season at-bat for the Captains, and came around to score on a single by Ben Lenda.

CNU wraps up the 2011 regular season with 39 wins, a new CNU record for wins in a season. The Captains previous record was 38, set in the 2002 season that saw CNU reach the College World Series.
