MEADVILLE, Pa. – Battling the elements all this spring, the Allegheny baseball team picked up a non-conference doubleheader against usual conference rival Oberlin College on Sunday afternoon to get in one final regular season home date in order to honor the seniors on their Senior Day. For Zack Nichols, Mike Pereslucha, Matt Stahl, David Strawser, and Mike Susi, the seniors on the 2011 club, they went out in style with a sweep of Oberlin, 4-3 and 5-2.

Trailing 3-1 with two outs in the bottom of the second inning of the first game, Stahl delivered a two-run single through the right side to knot the game at three-all. That was the only hit in the inning for the Gators (16-14) as Frank Triozzi and Eric Hansen each reached base via the hit-by-pitch ahead of Stahl's single. Triozzi and Hansen each stole a base (Triozzi stole second and third) to put themselves in scoring position with two outs.

With the game now tied, game one starter Kyle Davis settled into the start in a big way, not allowing a hit over his next three innings and only two hits in his final five innings on the mound. For the third time this season, Davis would go the distance in his start. This time Davis' stat line would read seven innings pitched with six hits, three runs (two earned), three walks, and four strikeouts.

The go-ahead and eventual game-winning run would come around in the bottom of the sixth inning without the aid of a single hit, but sound fundamental hitting none the less. Nichols led off the sixth inning with a hit-by-pitch. Andy Feikls would pinch-hit and moved Nichols to second base with a sacrifice bunt to the mound. Nichols would move himself 90 feet away from home on a wild pitch. Now with a runner at third base with less than two outs, Triozzi lifted a pitch deep enough into left field to score Nichols from third.

Trying to close things out in the top of the seventh got interesting for Davis and the Gators. A leadoff hit put the tying run on base. Davis would bear down to get the next two outs. With two away, and the leadoff hitter still on first base, an attempted steal of second base resulted in a throwing error by Triozzi. On the errant thrown, Ben Puterbaugh easily advanced to third, but in an aggressive base running gamble tried for home. Gators second baseman Jeff Dassner, who chased after the throw, alertly saw Puterbaugh's attempt and gunned him at home plate to end the game.

Game two saw senior right-hander David Strawser toe the rubber for the final time at home as a Gator. Heading into the start, Strawser is already second all-time in games started as pitcher with over 30 career starts.

Through the first three innings, the Yeomen would get six hits and plate two runs off of Strawser, but that would be the absolute only offense they would generate in the game. From the fourth inning on, Strawser not only did not allow another hit, but he was perfect as no Yeomen reached base after the third inning.

In support of Strawser, the Gators offense scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth to go-ahead in the game 4-2, and added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth. It was the second time this season that the Gators have swept a doubleheader with both of their starting pitchers going the distance. The earlier instance was against NCAC Tournament Champion Wabash College. Davis was also one of the starting pitchers that day.

Next up for the Gators is a nine-inning contest against Division I Youngstown State University under the lights on Tuesday, May 3rd at YSU. First pitch is set for 6:00 p.m.
