Baseball: Grove City Sweeps Westminster in Regular-Season Finale

NEW CASTLE, Pa. - In its final games of the regular season, the Westminster College baseball team lost a pair of games against Grove City by scores of 10-4 in the first game and 10-3 in the second game. The first game, a continuation of a postponed game at Grove City on Saturday, was held at Westminster's on-campus field. The second game was a night game held at Neshannock High School.

Westminster, the No. 4 seed in this weekend's Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) Tournament, finishes the regular season with a record of 23-14 and 10-11 in the PAC. Grove City clinched the top seed and hosting rights in the PAC Tournament with an overall record of 21-14 and 15-6 in the PAC.

In the first game, the Titans scored four runs in the sixth inning to tie the game at 4-4. However, Grove City plated six runs in the bottom of the inning to secure the win.

Freshman first baseman/outfielder Jordan Izzo (New Castle, Pa./Union) hit a two-run single in the sixth inning and junior shortstop Ethan Yeager (Pottstown, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) hit a run-scoring double to highlight the Titans' four-run inning.

Sophomore outfielder Tyler Robinson (Creston, Ohio/Norwayne) led the Titans' seven-hit offense in the first game by going 2-for-3.

Ryan Parker hit a lead-off homer for Grove City's go-head run in the sixth off Westminster senior relief pitcher Andy Burlett (Freedom, Pa./Ambridge). Burlett (0-1) took the loss by pitching 1/3 of the sixth inning with six runs (5 earned) off three hits and two walks.

Scott Moran hit a grand slam later in the sixth inning to put the game out of reach for Grove City.

Morgan, Parker and Dan Quirk led the Wolverines with two hits apiece to account for six of the team's eight hits.

In the second game, Grove City posted a pair of four-run innings in the first and second innings before adding two more in the third inning to cruise to victory.

Seven different Wolverines registered two hits apiece to account for Grove City's 16 hits, including Kyle Wolff going 2-for-3 with a team-high three RBI.

Junior catcher Dominic Neely (Prospect, Pa./Slippery Rock) led the Titans by going 2-for-3 to account for half of Westminster's four hits.

Four Grove City pitchers took the mound with Zach Butler earning the win by going four innings with a walk, a hit and four strikeouts.

Junior starting pitcher Andy Wallen (Erie, Pa./Iroquois) took the loss for Westminster after going two innings with eight runs off 10 hits and two walks with two strikeouts.

Grove City will host the PAC Tournament at Cene Park in Struthers, Ohio, beginning Thursday. Tournament pairings will be released by the league office Tuesday morning.
