WASHINGTON – Three CUA pitchers combined to allow only three hits and one run in a 4-1 Cardinals victory over McDaniel (1-2) on Tuesday. Tom Egan got the start for CUA (3-2) and went 3.2 innings, surrendering just two hits and a run during that time before giving way to Rob Renzi and Robin Mowatt.
CUA jumped on top with a pair of runs in the second. Mark Kalokitis led the inning off with a walk and Brendan Breslin followed with a single. An error by McDaniel's centerfielder moved Kalokitis over to third and that brought up Dave Grear.
Grear smashed a double to plate two runs and give CUA an early lead.
The Green Terror cut CUA's lead to one in the fourth when Jimmy Najera drove in Patrick Christopher with a single.
CUA came right back with two more runs in the bottom half of the frame to up its lead to 4-1. Kalokitis led things off with a single and Grear was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second.
Dan Sullivan was next and he laced a two-run double to give the Cardinals a three-run advantage.
That was all the offense CUA needed as the Cardinal hurlers took over from there.
Egan finished with one strikeout and only one run allowed in his 3.2 innings of work, while Renzi struck out three batters in a little over an inning. Mowatt then went four innings to earn the save, striking out one and not allowing any hits.
Zach Jones was dealt the loss for McDaniel, after he went four innings, allowed four runs and struck out one.
Sullivan finished with two hits to lead CUA, while Matt Grieb, Kalokitis, Breslin, and Grear each had one hit.
The Cardinals close out their six-game homestand on Thursday when they welcome York College to Talbot Field. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
