LAKELAND, Fla. – Sophomore Zach Carlino (Pittsburgh, Pa.) pitched seven innings of three-hit, shutout ball and helped himself out at the plate with a pair of RBI as the Mount Union baseball team (7-2) defeated Wentworth (7-5), 11-4, at Tenoroc High School. The game was the final game for both teams of their respective spring trips.

Neither team was able to generate any runs through the first three and a half innings, despite the Leopards having a runner on second base in each of their first four at bats. However, in the home half of the inning, the Raiders scored six times when Carlino drove in a run when he reached on an error and eventually scored on a wild pitch and sophomores Ricky Olasz (West Miffin, Pa.) and Lee Grosscup (Green, Ohio, Green) each had RBI singles.

The Raiders upped their lead to 8-0 in the sixth inning when sophomore Evan Knott (Canton, Ohio) had an RBI groundout and Carlino had his second RBI of the day. An inning later Mount Union took advantage of a Wentworth error with one out by scoring two runs to increase the lead to 10-0.

In the top of the eighth Wentworth scored four times to make it a 10-4 game. Junior Alex Wong (Lewiston, Maine) led off with a walk and eventually came around to score on a wild pitch, while freshman Jake Mailman (Medway, Mass.) delivered a two-run single and senior Kevin McKenzie (Arlington, Mass.) drove in Mailman with a single of his own.

Mount Union rounded out the scoring with an RBI double off the bat of freshman Anthony Morino (Strongsville, Ohio) in the bottom of the eighth.

Carlino picked up his first win of the season (1-0) by allowing just three hits and one walk and striking out four batters. Grossup was 3-for-3 with an RBI, while Olasz was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Three other Raiders had two hits apiece.

Senior Adam Farrar (Newport, Vt.) took the loss (0-2) as he allowed six runs (two earned) on six hits and struck out six in five innings of work. Junior Ryan DeCotis (Nashua, N.H.) allowed a pair of runs in the sixth, with classmate Ryan Conrad (East Bridgewater, Mass.) allowing just one earned run over the final two innings. Mailman paced the offense with a pair of hits.

Wentworth opens the northern portion of its schedule on Wednesday, March 15, at MIT.
