FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- Another dominant pitching performance from junior Greg Goldsmith was somewhat overshadowed on Sunday, as the #3 Christopher Newport Captains (13-3, 3-1) bounced back in a big way offensively, with a 13-0 win over Methodist University (13-9, 1-3). The Captains pitching staff posted a one-hit shutout against the Monarchs, led by seven strong from Goldsmith.

The Monarchs upset CNU by holding down the potent offense in a shutout, but the Captains returned the favor on Sunday, smacking seven extra-base hits including three home runs, while giving up just one hit on the other side of the field.

Goldsmith made his fourth start of the year and was magnificent for the Captains, taking a no-hitter into the sixth inning before surrendering the first and only hit of the day for Methodist, a single by Trey Such. The junior starter for CNU struck out eight and lowered his season earned run average to 0.35.

Juniors Richard Lindsay and Ryan Fleischmann each tossed perfect frames in the eighth and ninth, respectively, to close out the win. Fleischmann struck out two as CNU picked up its second shutout of the year.

As good as the arms were, though, the Captains offense came to life early and often against the Monarchs. Pre-season All-American Connor Madden led things off with a solo home run in the first at-bat of the game, paving the way for 12 more runs in the game.

CNU scored two in the first and three runs each in the second, third and fourth innings, opening up an 11-0 lead. Senior catcher Ben Lenda doubled and rookie center fielder Preston Grissom tripled in back-to-back at-bats in the third, and senior right fielder Steven Lindemuth blasted the first of a pair of two-run home runs in the top of the fourth.

Lindemuth added his second two-run dinger in the top of the ninth to finish out an impressive 3-5 day with four RBI and two runs scored. Madden also tacked on three hits, including his solo homer, for a 3-5, two RBI, two run performance. All nine Captains starters had at least one hit and all but one registered at least one RBI and a run scored.

The Captains offense totaled 15 hits and eight walks in support of Goldsmith and Co. CNU finishes out its extremely tough string of games at home on Monday, hosting Albertus Magnus at 2:00 pm. The game will be the 10th in 12 days and 13th in the last 17 days.
