WASHINGTON – In a battle of 2011 NCAA Tournament teams, CUA outlasted Johns Hopkins 7-6 on Monday afternoon at Talbot Field.  Dan Sullivan finished with three hits and three RBI to lead the Cardinals, while Marc Hanna, Colin McCarthy and Dave Grear all added two hits.

After dropping a 7-2 decision to the Blue Jays in last year's NCAA Tournament in Lakewood, N.J., CUA exacted some revenge on Monday, dropping JHU to 2-2-2 overall this season.  CUA improves to 10-3 with the win, and has now won eight of its last nine overall.

Johns Hopkins grabbed a 2-0 lead in the top of the second when Ryan Zakszeski belted a two-run homer to left field.

CUA got one of the runs back in the bottom of the inning when McCarthy reached on a two-out error, moved down to second on a wild pitch and came around on Sullivan's single to right field. 

The Blue Jays scored two more runs in the third to go in front 4-1.  Aaron Borenstein drove in one of the runs with a single and Richie Carbone's single plated the other.

The Cardinals stormed back with five runs in their half of the third to surge in front 6-4.  Matt Grieb got CUA started with a one-out single.  Tim Mierzwa followed with a single and Hanna notched the Cardinals' third straight single, which brought home Grieb.

Mark Kalokitis continued the hit parade for CUA with a single of his own, which plated Mierzwa to make it 4-3.

After JHU got Brendan Breslin to pop out, McCarthy stepped in and he delivered yet another single, which brought in Hanna and tied things at four.

Sullivan was next and he roped a double to center that plated Hanna and Mierzwa and put CUA on top for the first time.

A Mierzwa sac fly in the fourth plated Grear and put CUA in front by three.

The Blue Jays cut it to a two-run game in the fifth when Borenstein singled home Kyle Neverman.  JHU then added another single run in the eighth when Mike Kanen drove in Kenny Pierson to make the score 7-6.

McCarthy singled to lead off the bottom of the eighth for CUA, but the Cardinals were unable to add any insurance runs, and so the teams headed for the ninth. 

In the final frame, CUA's Thomas Travaglia got the first two hitters to fly out, before Zakszeski singled to left, and Joe Hemmes followed with a single of his own to left.

Unfazed, Travaglis induced Mike Musary into a fly out to center, ending the game and sending the Cards to their fourth straight win.

Robin Mowatt got the start and win for CUA, after going 4.2 innings, and allowing five runs on nine hits during that time.  Rob Renzi (2.1 innings), Andrew Carroll (0.2 innings) and Chris Nee came on in relief, before turning things over to Travaglia for the final four outs.

Tyler Goldstein started for JHU and allowed seven runs on eight hits, before Jared Frydman (2.1 innings), Garrett Gomez (1.0 inning) and Blake Platt (1.0) took over.

CUA is now off for the rest of the week before returning to action on Saturday with a big conference opening series at Moravian.  The Cardinals and Greyhounds will play twice on Saturday, with game one beginning at noon, and on Sunday the teams will play a single game starting at 11 a.m.
