Providence, R.I.- Freshman right fielder Dean Grasso (Cranston, RI) and senior shortstop Kyle Allaire (Uxbridge, MA) combined for seven RBI as a seven-run first inning lifted the Rhode Island College baseball team past Roger Williams, 13-4, in its home opener on Tuesday afternoon at Anchorman Field.
 
Seven different Anchormen drove in runs for RIC (6-5), while nine different players scored runs. Allaire finished the afternoon with three RBI, a double and a run scored after going 3-for-5 at the plate. Grasso went 2-for-5 with a triple, a run scored and a career-high four RBI. 
 
The majority of that offense came in the first inning, as the Anchormen batted around and scored seven runs on six hits to take a commanding lead. After an RBI double from senior left fielder Brent Hopkins (Cranston, RI) plated senior catcher J.P. Stone (Narragansett, RI) to get RIC on the board in the first, Grasso ripped a triple to center field that drove in a pair of runs and gave the Anchormen a 3-0 lead.
 
A few batters later, Allaire laced a single to left center field that scored two more runners. Moments later, junior center fielder Kevin Carey (Wakefield, RI) crossed the plate following an error to make it, 7-0, in the first frame.
 
Rhode Island College added another run in the third after Allaire drove in senior second baseman Joan Mustafa (Providence, RI) with an RBI single. However, Roger Williams (3-9) responded in the fourth stanza with four straight runs, capped off by an RBI single from sophomore left fielder Mike Pascarella (Milford, CT) that scored senior center fielder Chris Comeau (Southbury, CT) and made it just, 8-4.
 
The Hawks could have more in that frame, but their fourth inning rally came to a screeching halt after senior designated hitter Trevor Manzi (Beverly, MA) blasted a double that would have scored a run. However, Manzi was called out after failing to touch first base on his way to second base, which ended the inning.
 
Roger Williams went quietly from there, as freshman pitcher Dylan Cummiskey (Warwick, RI) and junior pitcher David Hoey (Lincoln, RI) were outstanding in relief of sophomore pitcher C.J. Tsoumakas (Hope, RI), who tossed four innings and surrendered four runs (two earned) on seven hits, while walking one and striking out four.
 
Cummiskey (1-0) picked up the win, allowing just three hits and a walk in four shutout innings, while fanning three batters. Hoey made his first appearance of the season and hurled a perfect ninth.
 
The Anchormen added four more runs in the eighth inning, spearheaded by a two-run single from Grasso and an RBI single from junior third baseman Cody Ortega (Kissimmee, FL).
 
Ortega went 3-for-4 with a double, an RBI and a run scored, while Brent Hopkins went 2-for-3 with a double, an RBI and a game-high three runs scored. Mustafa also finished with a pair of runs scored and an RBI after going 2-for-5 at the dish.
 
Sophomore pitcher Sean Boyle (Arlington, MA) got tagged with the loss (1-2) after conceding eight runs (seven earned) on 10 hits in five innings of work. Pascarella went 4-for-5 at the dish with an RBI to highlight the day for Roger Williams, while junior right fielder Rob Zarthar (Dedham, MA) went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.
 
In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will travel to Salem State on Thursday, March 22 (3:30 p.m.).
