Lake’s Three RBIs Pace Emory to 5-4 Win over Huntingdon

More news about: Emory

Emory University freshman Brett Lake drove in three runs, including the go-ahead run with a single in the top of the ninth inning, leading the Eagles to a 5-4 win and weekend sweep at Huntingdon College on Sunday.

Sophomore starting pitcher Ben Hinojosa contributed with eight and a third innings on the mound, scattering 11 hits and allowing four runs.  Hinojosa walked just one, while striking out six, en route to the win, improving to 3-1 on the season.

After both teams went scoreless through the first three innings, Emory took advantage of a strange play in the top of the fourth to take an early lead.  After sophomore catcher Jared Welch drew a leadoff walk to start the inning and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from sophomore Josh Bokor, junior Daniel Iturrey grounded out to second, but after a collision between the first baseman and Iturrey, Welch was able to score from second on the play, giving the Eagles a 1-0 lead.

Huntingdon would take the lead an inning later, as four runners reached against Hinojosa with two outs, including RBI hits for Grant Brown and Seth Currie, giving the Hawks a 2-1 lead.

Emory would mount a two out rally of its own in the seventh to regain the lead.  With senior Kevin O'Connor on first after a one-out single, junior Maxim Sankey was hit by a pitch and junior Mark Lindemann walked to load the bases for Lake.  The freshman responded with a base hit up the middle, scoring O'Connor and Sankey and giving the Eagles a 3-2 advantage.

Huntingdon evened the score in the eighth, as Tyler Blackwell's one out single up the middle scored Jordan Freeman from second.

Emory responded immediately again in the ninth, as Sankey led the inning off with a double and was moved to third on a sacrifice bunt from Lindemann.  It would be Lake again who gave the Eagles the lead, driving in Sankey on the next at bat with a single through the left side.  After Lake stole second base, his team-leading 21st of the season, he scored on an RBI single from Welch with two outs.

Despite trailing by two, the Hawks did not go down without a fight in the ninth.  With Hinojosa vying for the complete game, two singles and a walk loaded the bases with one out in the inning.  Sophomore Matt McMahon entered the game in relief of Hinojosa, and after allowing a run on a sacrifice fly and a walk to reload the bases, struck out Blackwell looking to end the game, and pick up his first save of the season.

Lake finished the game three-for-five with a run scored and three RBIs for the Eagles.  Sankey added a pair of hits during the game as well.

Reliever Cory Belyeu took the loss for Huntingdon, falling to 4-2 on the season.  The Hawks dropped to 17-8 overall on the campaign.

Emory raised its record to 16-7 on the year, taking two of three games in the season series against Huntingdon.  The Eagles have now won a season-best five games in a row, and 11 of their last 13 games.

The Eagles will return to Chappell Park on Tuesday for their first home game in three weeks, hosting Birmingham-Southern College at 3:00 PM.
