MINNEAPOLIS -- The Augsburg College baseball team claimed its first doubleheader sweep of St. Olaf College since 1987 with 7-5 and 4-3 victories in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action on Tuesday afternoon at Parade Stadium.
With the victories, Augsburg improves to 19-8 overall, 5-3 in MIAC play -- Augsburg's best record after its first 27 games since a 24-3 start to the season in 1987, Augsburg's last MIAC championship campaign (31-10 overall). St. Olaf is now 9-16 overall, 2-6 in MIAC play.
The sweep was Augsburg's first over St. Olaf since 5-2 and 3-1 victories on April 23, 1987 at Parade Stadium. Augsburg is now 4-2 over the Oles in the last six meetings between the two schools.
Pitcher Tanner Oakes (FY, Jordan, Minn.), one of three first-year pitchers the Auggies used in the doubleheader, pitched a complete-game victory in the first game -- his second complete-game effort of the season and the sixth for an Auggie pitcher this year -- with seven strikeouts and one walk, allowing six hits. Oakes threw 106 pitches (74 strikes) to earn the victory, improving his record to 3-1 on the season.
Relief pitcher Dan Tombers (FY, Maple Grove, Minn./Osseo HS) pitched 3.2 innings of scoreless relief, striking out one while walking one, to earn his first collegiate victory for the Auggies in the second game. Tyler Flakne (FY, Fridley, Minn./Totino-Grace HS) started and struck out three while walking four in 3.1 innings of work.
Augsburg's Adam Carl (SO, Eagan, Minn.) went 4-for-6 at the plate in the doubleheader, highlighted by back-to-back RBI doubles in the first game. He scored three runs and added a stolen base in the twinbill. Alec Johnson (SR, Marine on St. Croix, Minn./Forest Lake HS) also went 4-for-6 at the plate in the doubleheader, driving in two runs and scoring a run. Tom Petersen (SR, Hugo, Minn./White Bear Lake HS) went 3-for-6 with a double and two RBI, scoring three runs.
Dylan Porter (SO, Rosemount, Minn.) went 3-for-5 in the doubleheader for St. Olaf, including a triple. Sam Maus (SO, Northfield, Minn.) went 2-for-4 at the plate with two RBI and two runs scored. Adam Johnson (JR, St. Cloud, Minn./Tech HS) had a three-run double in the first game for the Oles. Kyle Watson (JR, Cooper City, Fla.) pitched in relief in both games for the Oles, striking out two in four innings of work.
Augsburg jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first game, scoring three runs in the first inning and three runs in the third inning. Petersen drove in a run on a single, Carl doubled to drive in a run and Johnson plated a run on a groundout in the first inning. In the third, Petersen and Carl hit back-to-back RBI doubles, and Johnson plated a run on a single. Augsburg added an insurance run in the fifth inning, as Carl stole third base and scored on a throwing error.
The Oles scored five runs in the fourth inning, sending nine batters to the plate. Nick Kulla (SO, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North HS) plated a run on a fielder's choice, Maus singled to drive in a run and Johnson cleared the bases on a three-run double.
In the second game, St. Olaf took an early lead, as a Maus single plated Porter. Augsburg took a 2-1 lead in the second, as Gordon Kappers (FY, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North HS) plated a run on a groundout, and Anderson hit an RBI single. The Oles tied the game in the third on a Kulla RBI single, then took a 3-2 lead with an RBI single by Erik Nelson (SR, Edina, Minn.) in the fourth.
But Augsburg took the lead back in the bottom of the fourth with two outs, as Gerding and Brent Kolbow (JR, Forest Lake, Minn.) hit back-to-back run-scoring singles.
Both teams return to action with home MIAC doubleheaders on Saturday (4/14) at 1 p.m., as Augsburg hosts Concordia-Moorhead and St. Olaf hosts St. Thomas.
