VERONA, Wis. – Seniors Miles Mayer and Mike Selvaggi powered Edgewood College to a game one victory as the Eagles split Saturday's Northern Athletics Conference doubleheader with Marian University. The Eagles stopped the Sabres 4-1 in the first game, before falling 6-1 in the finale on a beautiful day at Stampfl Field.

Edgewood College's Mayer baffled the Sabres in the first game limiting them to just two hits over eight innings of work. Mayer gave up a run in the run in the fourth and then escaped a bases loaded jam in the sixth with a brilliant double play. Marian's John Cetnar hit a slow roller up the first base line, the Alex Jaskulski picked up and fired home to Sean Thompson for the first out. Thompson then returned the throw back to Mayer covering first base to get out of the inning. The play was one of a season-high four double plays turned by the Eagles in the first game. Mayer earned his first win of the season, while Brock McGinn pitched a scoreless ninth inning for his first save of the year.

On the offensive side, Selvaggi took care of everything Edgewood College (8-14, 5-5 NAC). In the first, Selvaggi hit a double down the left field line to drive home Ryan Walker from third base. In the third, he threaded a ground ball past the shortstop which allowed Walker to score again, this time from second base. He saved the biggest blow for the fifth inning, smashing a two-run home run to left field to give the Eagles the final margin of victory at 4-1. Selvaggi had three of the Eagles' five hits and drove in all four runs.

Marian University (14-10, 7-5 NAC) turned the tables on the Eagles in game two, converting three double plays to halt Eagle rallies. Edgewood College picked up their only run in the third inning on a Zach Creekmore RBI single. Jake Thome, who had doubled, scored on Creekmore's hit which cut the Sabres lead to 2-1 at that point in the game. The Eagles managed seven more hits in the game, but never managed to push across another run.

Thome and Jake Zadra each had two hits in the game, with Thome recording his double. Eagle starting pitcher Trevor Koehn lasted six innings, and gave up four earned runs on five hits. Zane Mederios and Joe Gura closed out the game on the mound. Marian pitcher Cory Martin scattered eight hits over 7.1 innings to earn his first win of the season.

Edgewood College will return to the diamond tomorrow with a doubleheader at Wisconsin Lutheran College in Milwaukee.
