GETTYSBURG, Pa. – The Bullets pounded out 30 hits and Gettysburg swept a Centennial Conference doubleheader from Muhlenberg College on Saturday, winning 13-8 and 9-3 at Kirchhoff Field.
Gettysburg (17-10, 6-6 CC), which rallied from early deficits in both games, won its third game in a row and for the fifth time in its last six games. The Bullets swept Muhlenberg (18-16, 2-10 CC) for the first time since 2007 and snapped a four-game losing streak versus the Mules.
Junior Pat Cody hit a grand slam in the opener and finished the day 5-for-10 with seven RBIs for Gettysburg. He was facing off against his younger brother, Jimmy, who is Muhlenberg's starting centerfielder.
Sophomore Austin Davis was 5-for-7 with five runs for the Bullets, upping his season batting average to an incredible .618, while senior #Clint O'Brien# hit 4-for-7 with a pair of triples. Freshman Brett Harrington threw well in the nightcap, working 6 2/3 innings and allowing just three runs on five hits while making his first collegiate start.
Muhlenberg scored four unearned runs in the first inning of the opener against freshman starter Eric Hungerford to assume a 4-0 lead, with Brian Beck cracking a two-out, two-run triple and Nick Kennedy following up with a two-run homer. But after Mule starter Matthew Lawsky retired the Bullets in order in the first, Gettysburg went on to score at least one run in each of the next seven innings, when it piled up 20 hits.
Trailing 5-3 entering the fourth, the Bullets loaded the bases with sophomore Cam MacDonald and Davis singling before sophomore Al Posch was hit with a pitch. Reliever Zach Hoffman was then brought on to face Cody, who lined an 0-1 pitch over the rightfield fence, putting Gettysburg in front to stay at 7-5. It was also the first home run of the season for the Bullets and the second of Cody's career.
The Mules pulled to within a run twice, the last coming in the sixth, when it was 8-7. But in the bottom of the inning, the Bullets opened up some breathing room with three runs, getting RBI-singles from freshman Scott Zanghellini, MacDonald, and Davis to make it 11-7.
Gettysburg pushed its lead to 12-7 in the seventh before the Mules put up a threat in the eighth, scoring once and putting runners on first and second against sophomore reliever Chris Yoda. But junior John Donovan came on and struck out a pair, then worked a scoreless ninth to pick up his first collegiate save.
Each Bullet starter recorded at least one hit in the opener. Davis finished 4-for-5 – his fourth four-hit performance in six games – and scored three runs while freshman Cory Karagjozi went 3-for-5. Cody was 2-for-5 with five RBIs, and Posch finished 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs. Zanghellini, MacDonald, sophomore Nate Simon, and sophomore Patrick O'Grady all collected two hits each, with Zanghellini driving in two runs and MacDonald scoring twice.
Hungerford (3-3) pitched 5 2/3 innings and earned the win. He gave up seven runs (three earned) on 14 hits and a pair of walks. Yoda allowed one run on three hits and two walks while striking out three over 1 2/3 innings, and Donovan allowed just a single while fanning two over his 1 2/3 innings of work.
Lawsky (1-3) was charged with the loss while Beck and Kennedy each had big games at the plate. Beck went 4-for-6 and missed the cycle by a double, finishing with a triple and a home run to go with three runs and four RBIs. Kennedy was 4-for-5 with two RBIs.
In the nightcap Muhlenberg scored twice in the second on two hits, a walk, a hit batsman, and a sacrifice fly against Harrington. But he would find his groove and blank the Mules on two hits over the next four innings.
In the meantime, the Bullets scored nine unanswered runs and tied it against starter Pat Doolittle with a two-run second, when Cody bunted his way on and scored on a towering triple to left-center by O'Brien, who would score on a sac fly off the bat of sophomore Andrew Hollis. Gettysburg went ahead to stay with a two-run, one-hit third, when O'Grady led off with a walk and scored the go-ahead run when Davis laid down a sacrifice bunt that was thrown away, allowing O'Grady to score from first.
Gettysburg added a single run in the fifth before breaking it open with a four-run sixth, when Karagjozi and Cody each smacked two-run singles to make it 9-2.
The Mules finally got to Harrington again in the seventh, when John Muha led off with a double and scored after a pair of groundouts. After a batter reached on an error, Donovan came on to get the final out. He went on to fire two more scoreless innings, allowing only a pair of singles.
Harrington (1-1) earned his first collegiate victory while throwing his longest outing of the season. O'Brien went 3-for-3 with two runs and a pair of stolen bases, and Cody finished 3-for-5. Karagjozi drove in three runs while Davis scored twice.
Doolittle (0-1) took the loss for Muhlenberg, throwing 5 1/3 innings and giving up seven runs (five earned) on seven hits and two walks while striking out four. Jimmy Cody finished 2-for-4 in the nightcap.
