PATCHOGUE, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz baseball team (17-15) found itself on the losing end of a walk-off affair after prevailing in a similar fashion on Sunday, as the Hawks dropped a 4-3 decision to St. Joseph's (LI) College (18-14) on Wednesday afternoon in non-conference action.

Brian Hannigan drove in the winning run with one out in the bottom of the ninth, bringing home Dennis Nover off a sacrifice fly. Nover put himself in scoring position due to stellar base running, as he stole second and third before being held in check with a groundout to the shortstop for the inning's first out.

The Eagles struck first, as Prateek Thaman scored on a fielder's choice in the fourth. The Hawks countered in the top of the fifth, though, as junior center fielder Matt Carr (Westbury, N.Y./Long Island Lutheran) plated the first of three unanswered runs for New Paltz with a single down the left-field line. Sophomore designated hitter Jimmy Briggs (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst) pushed across senior first baseman Jake Cameron (Rockville Centre, N.Y./South Side) in the sixth, while senior third baseman Mike Marash (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Hendrick Hudson) scored senior second baseman Chris Paulicelli (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst) in the top of the seventh to give the Hawks a 3-1 lead.

St. Joseph's fought back in the home half of the seventh, with a run coming across on a Hannigan double and another scoring due to a Thaman sacrifice fly. After Thaman brought in Anthony Delury, the Eagles knotted the tally at 3-all, setting the stage for the walk-off hit in the ninth.

New Paltz used six pitchers, and sophomore James McKenna (Bohemia, N.Y./Connetquot) was tagged with the loss, giving up one run off one hit and a walk to go along with a strikeout over 2 1/3 innings of work in relief. Steven Szobesky earned the win for St. Joseph's coming out of the bullpen, retiring five of the six batters he faced in two frames of duty off strikeouts.

Carr (2-for-4, RBI) and Paulicelli (2-for-3, two runs scored) paced the Hawk offense, while the Eagles were led by Nover (2-for-5, two runs scored), Rich Pecoraro (2-for-3, double) and Seth Pileggi (2-for-4).

New Paltz returns to the diamond on Friday, April 20, as it faces league foe SUNY Fredonia in the first of a three-game weekend set at Loren Campbell Memorial Field. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
