GORHAM, Maine – Endicott baseball won their sixth straight game on Wednesday afternoon, beating the University of Southern Maine Huskies 3-2 in their first of three games outside of Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action.
The Gulls fell behind 1-0 but battled back with a run in the seventh and two runs in the eighth inning to help them improve to 17-13 on the year. Southern Maine sees their record even up at 14-14.
Danny Mello (Peabody, Mass.) and Harry Oringer (Dartmouth, Mass.) had RBI's for the Gulls and center fielder Tad Gold (Martha's Vineyard, Mass.) had two of their eight hits and scored a run.
Mello singled home right fielder Conor Ressel (Rockport, Mass.) in the seventh to tie the game at one. The next inning, Endicott took advantage of an error by second baseman John Carey (South Portland, Maine), one of three miscues by the Huskies on the afternoon.
E.J. Martinez (Brooklyn, N.Y.) reached on the error, allowing Gold to cross the plate and first baseman Colin Sitarz (W. Hartford, Mass.), who had singled, to go to third. Sitarz would come in to score later in the inning on a sacrifice fly to center field by the freshman Oringer.
Southern Maine jumped out to a lead in the bottom of the second when first baseman Peter Mucher (Farmington, N.H.) singled home left fielder David Ricker (Winthrop, Mass.). The Huskies got their only other run in the bottom of the ninth inning on an RBI single by Brett Barrett (Keene, N.H.), who was 2-2 on the day.
Forest Chadwick (Gardiner, Maine), who also had two of the Husky's seven hits, came in to score on the play, but that was all that the hosts could manage off of sophomore closer John Morrison (Ridgefield, Conn.), who picked up his fourth save of the season.
Endicott junior reliever Kevin Dupras (Belchertwon, Mass.) picked up his first win of the season, improving to 1-0 by pitching scoreless sixth and seventh innings. Sophomore Tyler Hill (Plymouth, N.H.) made the start for the Gulls, allowing just one earned run on three hits and striking out three batters over four and two-thirds innings.
Freshman Alex Tobey (South Berwick, Maine) pitched a solid six and a third innings for Southern Maine, allowing one run on five hits. The loss went to senior Greg Holmes (West Newbury, Mass.), who falls to 0-2 after allowing two runs in just a third of an inning.
Endicott will be back on their home field tomorrow afternoon with a non-conference matchup against Suffolk. First pitch is slated for 3:30 pm.
The Huskies will host Plymouth State on Saturday in a Little East doubleheader starting at 12:00 pm.
