UW-La Crosse Completes Series Sweep of UW-Superior

Duluth, Minn. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse baseball team completed a four-game series sweep of UW-Superior Sunday afternoon at Wade Stadium.  The Eagles, ranked 22nd on D3hoops.com, won the opener, 8-1, and the nightcap, 10-4.  UW-L improves to 27-9 overall and 18-2 in the WIAC.  The 27 wins ties the single-sason school record for victories.  The Eagles were 27-14 in 2000.  UW-Superior falls to 17-18 overall and 8-12 in the conference.

UW-L defeated UW-Superior, 6-1 and 6-5 in Saturday's doubleheader.  The Eagles have won 15 of their last 16 games overall after Sunday's action.

In the opener Sunday, Kevin Johnson (3-0) pitched a complete-game victory for UW-L.  He went 9.0 innings, allowing four hits, one run and one walk with seven strikeouts.

UW-Superior took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on T.J. Evanson's home run.  UW-L tallied four times in the top of the third.  Adam Cordova tied the game with an RBI single to score Corey Geary followed by a Jay Fanta run-scoring double to knock in Brooks Braga.  Jake Paulson had a sacrifice fly to score Cordova and Fanta scored on the play after a Yellowjackets' error.

The Eagles added three runs in the eighth and one in the ninth to finish the scoring.  Paulson hit an RBI double to score Cordova in the top of the eighth.  Fanta later scored on an error and Zach Harazin hit a sacrifice fly.   Cordova hit an RBI double to score Braga in the ninth.

Braga, Cordova, Fanta and Paulson each had two hits for UW-L with Braga, Cordova and Fanta scoring twice.  Cordova and Paulson had two RBI.

Ethan Branum (4-4) suffered the loss for UW-Superior, pitching 7.0 innings, allowing nine hits, six runs (four earned) and one walk with two strikeouts.

Four different players had a hit for the Yellowjackets.

In the nightcap, Tim Larson (3-0) picked up the victory for UW-L.  He pitched 5.2 innings, allowign seven hits, three runs and five walks while striking out five.

UW-L took a 5-0 lead in the top of the second inning.  Trevor Burmeister gave the Eagles a 1-0 lead on an RBI single to score Brett Jacobson.  Cole Cefalu made it 3-0 with a two-run single and Cordova and Paulson each hit an RBI single.

Cefalu hit a three-run home run in the fifth inning to make it 8-0 and the Eagles added two runs in the sixth on Harazin's RBI double and Connor Krohn's pinch-hit RBI single.

UW-Superior tallied three runs in the sixth with an RBI groundout from Joe Ahrens; a bases-loaded walk to Rob Veith and an RBI single from Tony Remund.  Wyatt Soderquist hit a sacrifice fly in the eighth.

Cefalu, Cordova, Fanta, Paulson, Harazin and Burmeister each had two hits for UW-L as the team finished with 15 overall.  Cefalu scored twice and finished with five RBI while Harazin scored three times and Burmeister twice.

Graham Miller (2-1) took the loss for UW-Superior, going 1.0 inning, allowing two hits, one run and one walk.

Remund finished 3-for-4 while Veith was 2-for-4.  Each player had one RBI.

UW-L returns to action Friday, May 4 at UW-Stout at 1 p.m.
