OLIVET, Mich. – The Adrian College baseball team entered the 2012 season with question marks at several positions. Through 34 games in 2012, those questions have been answered the same way they have been for the past three years. The Bulldogs improved to 29-6 overall and captured their fourth straight outright MIAA championship (22-2) with a doubleheader sweep at Olivet College on Tuesday.
The eighth-ranked Bulldogs claimed the championship with a 10-2 game one win and polished off a season sweep of the Comets with a 7-0 shutout in game two. Junior Cody Meyer launched his first homer of the season in game one and then connected on his second homer of the season in game two. Kyle Strawn smoked his fourth long ball in 2012 in game two. Jamey Sackett also played long ball in game two with his first dinger of the year.
Sophomore Brent Greenwood improved to 3-1 overall and pitched his first career shutout in game two. Greenwood went seven innings and allowed five hits (two doubles) with no walks and two strikeouts. For the four-game series, Adrian pitching allowed no walks and struck out 22 Comets. The staff posted a 0.96 ERA in 28 innings as Olivet hitters batted just .216 as a squad with four doubles. Adrian collected eight doubles, two triples and four homers in the series.
Junior Garrett Green had a great series versus Olivet going 6-of-11 at the dish (.545) with three runs, a double and two RBI's. Green went 3-for-3 in game one on Tuesday and 0-for-2 with a run and walk in game two. The run producer in game two included Sackett with two RBI's and Meyer also with two RBI's.
In game one the damage came off the bats of Meyer with two RBI's and five other Bulldogs with one RBI. Sam Fischer collected his 10th double of the year in game one. Green recorded his eighth double in game one. Anthony Sergi pinch hit in game one and had his third two-bagger of 2012. Eric Schmidt improved to 6-0 during his freshman year in game one. He threw six innings and allowed four hits and two earned runs. Schmidt also struck out five and then handed the ball over to senior Craig Steadman who threw a clean seventh.
Adrian will look for their fifth straight 30-win campaign tomorrow night as they host Ohio Northern in a nine-inning game under the lights at Nicolay Field. First pitch against the Polar Bears (14-21) is set for 7:00 PM.
