Saints Drop Twinbill to No. 18 Washington & Jefferson, But Clinch Berth to Seventh Straight PAC Tournament

(WASHINGTON, Pa.) - The Thomas More College baseball team fell twice to 18th-ranked Washington & Jefferson College today (Saturday, May 5, 2012) in a President's Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader at Ross Memorial Park in Washington, Pennsylvania.  W&J won the game one, 2-1, and the nightcap, 7-4.

With the win, the Presidents improve to 32-6 overall and 20-3 in the PAC, while with the loss, the Saints fall to 25-13 overall and 13-10 in the PAC.   Despite the loss, Thomas More claimed a berth into next week's PAC Championship with losses to Saint Vincent College and Waynesburg University today.   Thomas More has now made the PAC Tournament all seven years since it joined the PAC during the 2005-2006 academic year.  The Saints will be the No. 3 seed, while Washington & Jefferson will be the No. 1 seed, Westminster College will be the No. 2 seed and Saint Vincent will be the No. 4 seed.  The tournament begins on Thursday (May 10) will all games hosted by W&J at Ross Memorial Park.

In the first game of the day, the Saints took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning when senior first baseman Andrew Thole (Cincinnati, Ohio/McNicholas) hit a run batted-in double scoring junior shortstop David Kennett (Grove City, Ohio/Grove City).  The Presidents then had a one-out two RBI single in the bottom of the seventh for the 2-1 victory.

Senior pitcher Aaron Carmack (Miamisburg, Ohio/Miamisburg) started and had a no decision as he pitched six and one-third innings and gave up one run (earned) on six hits.  Junior David Etscheid (Union, Ky./Ryle) suffered the loss as he gave up one run (earned) on one hit in the seventh inning.

Kennett led the Saints at the plate as he was two-for-three with the run scored and Thole was one-for-two with the double and RBI and was walked twice.

In the nightcap, the Presidents scored two in the fourth and five in the sixth, while holding Thomas More to two runs in the fifth and two in the sixth for the 7-4 victory.

Sophomore third baseman Travis Miller (Erlanger, Ky./St. Henry) was one of four Saints with a hit in the game as he was one-for-three with a home run, two RBI and a run scored.

On the mound, freshman Tim Baldrick (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) suffered the loss as he pitched five innings and gave up six runs (all earned) on 10 hits and struck out two.

Thomas More and W&J will close out the three-game series tomorrow with a single nine-inning game starting at 12 p.m. at Ross Memorial Park.
