MINNEAPOLIS – Gallaudet University sophomore outfielder William Bissell (Brewer, Maine) was named to the 2012 All-South Region first team as announced by D3baseball.com.
Bissell, the two-time North Eastern Athletic Conference West Division Player of the Year and two-time all-conference first teamer, is the only sophomore on the first team. The Maine native is the lone representative from the NEAC to be selected to the first team of any of the eight regional teams as selected by the national website.
Bissell, a preseason All-American honorable mention selection named by D3baseball.com, started all 42 games for the Bison and is 11th in the nation in triples (seven), 25th in slugging percentage (.697) as of May 13. Bissell leads the NEAC/NAC in triples, total bases (99), third in slugging percentage, sacrifice flies (five), home runs (six), fourth in runs (43), hits (55), sixth in batting average (.387), RBI (37), eighth in stolen bases (16), 11th in doubles (12), 12th in games (42), 13th in plate appearances (167) and 14th in on-base percentage (.449).
Bissell is not only a threat on offense but he plays spectacular defense as he posted a .955 fielding percentage to go with 100 put outs and five assists.
Bissell helped to lead Gallaudet to its best season ever as the Bison compiled a 25-17 record and 10-4 conference mark. The Bison reached the NEAC West Division championship game but fell to Penn St.-Berks 13-5. The 25 wins is a new single-season record for the Gallaudet program that dates back to the late 1800s.
This is the first year D3baseball.com has compiled all-region teams. Players were nominated and by Sports Information Directors at the various schools. Over 700 players were nominated for the eight different regions (Central, Mid-Atlantic, Mideast, Midwest, New England, New York, South, West). The ballots were made available to Sports Information Directors and the D3baseball.com staff and contributors to vote for a predetermined number of players in their respective region.
