#1 Wheaton (Mass.) - 3, Farmingdale State - 1

Farmingdale, N.Y. - The Farmingdale State baseball team fell 3-1 to top-ranked Wheaton (Mass.) today in their final game of the 2013 Spring Classic in Farmingdale, N.Y. The Lyons improved to 2-0 with the win, while the Rams fall to 3-6 overall.

Farmingdale jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first with an RBI single to right by senior right fielder Terrence Bohonan (Patchogue, N.Y.), scoring sophomore shortstop Anthony Alvino (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) from second.

Wheaton tied the game in the top of the second, on a one-out RBI single to left by sophomore third baseman Justin Peluso (North Andover, Mass.). With two outs in the third inning, the Lyons went up 2-1 on another single to left, this time from senior catcher Dan Gusovsky (Andover, Mass.).

The game was scoreless over the next five innings, as each team left four runners on base. Farmingdale State allowed just two hits over those innings, thanks to freshman left hander Kevin Cashman (Hicksville, N.Y., 1.0 inns, 0 hits, 2 BB) and junior right hander Timmy Trimarchi (Hauppauge, N.Y., 3.0 inns, 2 hits, 2 K's). The Rams had a chance to take the lead in the eighth with runners on the corners and two outs, but a fly out would close the inning.

In the top of the ninth, the Lyons added one more run for the 3-1 advantage. Senior right fielder Paul O'Neill (Framingham, Mass.) opened the inning with a double, followed by a sacrifice bunt from freshman centerfielder Jimmy Smith (Worcester, Mass.) to move O'Neill to third. Sophomore left fielder Kevin Foley (Southbury, Conn.) scored O'Neill with a one-out bunt.

Junior righty Ryan Grant (Easton, Mass.) held the Rams hitless in the ninth, earning his first save of the year. Junior right hander Alec Palioca (Wrentham, Mass.) picked up his first win of the season, throwing 5.1 innings, allowing five hits and striking out five. Wheaton was led by Gusovsky, 2-for-4 with one RBI and one run scored, and Peluso at 2-for-4 with an RBI.

For Farmingdale State, Alvino finished 2-for-4 with a run scored. Bohonan finished 1-for-2 with one RBI and a walk.

The Rams will now host Brockport State and Plattsburgh State next weekend in the SUNYAC-Skyline Challenge.
