Washington University Baseball Picks Up 3-1 Win Over North Central

Sauget, Ill., March 3, 2013 – Solid pitching and freshman Max Golembo's three RBIs lifted the Washington University baseball team to a 3-1 win over North Central College (Ill.) Sunday afternoon at GCS Ballpark in Sauget, Ill.

Senior Max Gordon (1-0) scattered four hits and allowed just one run while striking out three in 6 1/3 innings to earn his first win of the season. Senior Alan Komorowski picked up his first save for the Bears with 2 2/3 scoreless innings, allowing one hit while striking out three. Golembo finished 2-for-2 with three RBIs and three walks to lead the Bears offensively.

North Central got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first inning, scoring on an RBI single after the Cardinals' leadoff batter reached on a walk. The score remained 1-0 in favor of North Central until the top of the seventh. Senior Kevin Paule was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and senior Matthew Polites reached with one out after also being hit by a pitch. After sophomore Noah Doppelt reached on a fielder's choice, he stole second to give the Bears two runners in scoring position. Golembo then hit a two-out RBI double up the middle to give Washington U. a 2-1 lead.

The Bears added an insurance run in the top of the ninth. Polites hit a one-out double and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Golembo followed with an RBI single to left field to put the Bears ahead 3-1. The Cardinals got two runners on with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, but Komorowski got Nick Daniels to pop up to end the game.

Washington U. (2-2) is scheduled to play its first two home games of the season, Monday, March 4, at Kelly Field. The Bears take on North Park University at 10 a.m., followed by a 2 p.m. game against Buena Vista University.

Bear Notebook: Golembo and sophomore Chris Lowery have both recorded hits in each of the Bears' four games this season … Komorowski now has 10 strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings this season.
