LOS ANGELES – It was a much-improved Caltech squad that earlier this year snapped a 228-game losing streak by beating Pacifica College.

But the Occidental College baseball team has been rolling as of late and took care of business for its fifth win in a row, beating Caltech 4-1 in a sloppy series opener at a soggy Anderson Field on Friday.

Junior Alec Strain (Sacramento) got the start and picked up the win for the Tigers (11-2, 5-2 SCIAC). He shut out the Beavers (1-14, 0-10 SCIAC) in five innings of work, allowing only three hits and two walks while striking out four.

Trevor Lecka (Newbury Park) entered the game in the sixth and followed up Strain's solid performance with one of his own. He exited the game after pitching three innings, allowing only one unearned run. The freshman also showed off his glove, making an impressive off-balance jump throw on a slow chopper hit to him with one out in the sixth.

The Tigers put up all of their runs in the fifth inning. Logan Allen (Atascadero) led the inning off with a walk, followed by a seeing-eye single towards second base hit by Victor Munoz (La Verne) that moved Allen to third. Allen scored the first run of the game on a groundball that was mishandled by Caltech shortstop Albie Lavin.

Derek Kearney got tacked with the loss for the Beavers despite a complete game effort. Only one of the four runs he allowed was earned.

Johnathan Brooks (Huntington Beach) and Jacob Lee (Olympia) provided the offense with enough clutch hitting to overcome their four-inning scoring drought. Brooks went 2 for 4, including a crucial two-RBI single that scored sophomore third baseman AJ Libunao (Huntington Beach) and speedy sophomore outfielder Jonathan Wong (Grizzly Flats). Lee went 1 for 3 with a run and an RBI.

Scott Hong (Los Angeles) came down from centerfield and pitched a perfect ninth to earn his third save of the season.

The Tigers returns to action against the Beavers tomorrow, traveling to Pasadena for a doubleheader. The first game is slated for a 11 a.m. start.
