Providence, R.I.- Senior center fielder Kevin Carey (Wakefield, RI) went 2-for-4 with a walk and two stolen bases, while freshman third baseman Justin Costa (Cranston, RI) finished 2-for-4 with a triple and an RBI, as Rhode Island College came up short against Salve Regina, 3-2, on Tuesday afternoon at Toppa Field in non-conference action.

Salve Regina (10-3) extends its season-long win streak to five games, while Rhode Island College falls to 2-13. The win was the first for Salve Regina over Rhode Island College since 2006, and only the eighth all-time in 26 meetings.

The Seahawks took a 1-0 lead in their first at-bat when sophomore second baseman Sean Becker (Richmond, VA) came home on junior catcher Dominic Di Sano's (Central Falls, RI) sacrifice fly to right field. Junior designated hitter Tyler Colby (Easton, CT) had doubled Becker to third after he had reached on a one-out single.

In the third inning, freshman center fielder Ryan Kelly (Waldwick, NJ) beat out a grounder to third for a one-out single. He later stole second and came around on Becker's second base hit, a liner to left center, to give Salve Regina a 2-0 lead.

After a couple of quiet innings, junior first baseman Justin Rainville (Cumberland, RI) worked a full-count off freshman right-hander Alex Croce (Rumford, RI) and eventually reached on an error to spark the Anchormen in the top of the sixth. One out later, Costa laced a triple to left-center field to plate Rainville and cut the Seahawk lead in half, 2-1.

Salve Regina answered back in the bottom of the sixth to extend its lead to two after DiSano opened the frame with a leadoff double. Freshman left fielder Ryan Sweenor (South Kingstown, RI) followed with a line drive single to left field that plated DiSano and made it, 3-1.

RIC rallied for a run in the top of seventh to cut the deficit to one after senior shortstop Zach Hubbard (Kissimmee, FL) doubled to open the frame for the Anchormen. Following a walk to Carey, both runners advanced on a wild pitch to put a pair of runners in scoring position. Hubbard soon came around to score on an RBI fielder's choice grounder from freshman catcher Matt Foley (Seekonk, MA), making it, 3-2.

After a quiet eighth inning, the Anchormen loaded bases in the top of the ninth to come within striking distance of the Seahawks, but Salve Regina junior closer Thomas Betros (Poughkeepsie, NY) shut the door on the visitors after giving up a single and two walks to earn the save (2).

Seahawks starting pitcher Gabe Cretella (Seymour, CT) threw five scoreless innings for the hosts to earn the win (2-1), scattering just five hits and one walk along the way, while striking out three. After a rocky sixth inning for Salve's bullpen, junior right-hander Kevin Lambert (Fairfield, CT) entered the game in the seventh and tossed two shutout innings in relief.

Sophomore starting pitcher Dylan Cummiskey (Warwick, RI) was tagged with the loss (0-2) despite allowing just three runs on six hits and one walk in six innings of work. The right-hander also struck out four in his first start of the season. Senior left-hander Kyle Florio (Plantsville, CT) was stellar in relief for RIC, striking out three and allowing just one hit in two shutout innings.

Becker and Colby each finished with multi-hit games for the Seahawks.

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College hosts Becker College on Wednesday, March 27 (3:45 p.m.).
