Providence, R.I.-The Rhode Island College baseball team plated four runs in the bottom of the ninth inning, including two runs off of a costly two-out error, to come away with a come-from-behind, 7-6, victory over Worcester State in non-conference action at Anchorman Field on Tuesday afternoon.

Rhode Island College (5-15) went into the bottom of the ninth inning trailing Worcester State (5-11) by three, 6-3. Senior center fielder Kevin Carey (Wakefield, RI) led off the frame with a single to center field, while sophomore right fielder Dean Grasso (Cranston, RI) followed with a single to left field to put runners on first and second.

After both Carey and Grasso advanced on a wild pitch to put two runners in scoring position, Carey came around to score on a second wild pitch that pulled the Anchormen to within two. Moments later, Grasso scored on the third wild pitch of the inning to make it just a two-run ballgame.

Sophomore left fielder Alex Verrecchia (Cranston, RI) was hit by pitch with one out in the frame and was replaced at first base by a pinch runner, sophomore outfielder Chris Siravo (Wakefield, RI). After freshman third baseman Justin Costa (Cranston, RI) ripped a single into right field, a fourth wild pitch moved both Siravo and Costa into scoring position with two outs in the inning.

That's when freshman catcher Matt Billington (Cumberland, RI) stepped in and lofted a deep fly ball to right center field that should have been the final out of the inning. However, as the right fielder sprinted backwards and made the catch, the ball fell out of his glove as he fell to the ground, allowing both Siravo and Costa to score and giving RIC a dramatic late-inning victory over the Lancers.

Senior right-hander Chris Mann (West Warwick, RI) recorded the win (2-1) for RIC in relief after recording a scoreless ninth inning, while sophomore left-hander Rob MacDonald (Waltham, MA) suffered the loss (0-1).

The Lancers mustered four of their six runs in the top of the second inning to take the early, 4-0, lead. Senior first baseman Nick Bonofiglio (Worcester, MA) and sophomore shortstop David Ruggiero (Peabody, MA) each drove in runs with a sacrifice fly and an RBI single, respectively, while Worcester State added two more on a pair of costly RIC errors.

The visiting Lancers also scored runs in the fourth and fifth inning on a pair of RBI singles from sophomore center fielder Steve Wallace (Auburn, MA) and sophomore left fielder Zach George (Attleboro, MA), respectively.

Meanwhile, the Anchormen plated a run in the third inning off of a towering solo home run (3) down the right field line from freshman designated hitter Matt Foley (Seekonk, MA). After RIC scored on an RBI double off the bat of Costa in the bottom of the sixth, the Anchormen tacked on their third run of the game in the bottom of the seventh when Grasso belted an opposite field home run (1) over the right field fence with the bases empty to pull the hosts within three.

Sophomore right-hander Stephen Lapatin (Cranston, RI) was relatively sharp in his fifth start of the season, as he allowed just two earned runs on nine hits in five innings of work. He struck out two and walked none in the no decision.

His counterpart, sophomore left-hander Cody Osburn (Sacramento, CA), allowed just two runs on 10 hits and three walks in six innings of work for Worcester State, while striking out five along the way.

RIC sophomore right-hander Kyle Morvan (Smithfield, RI) was fantastic in relief, as he gave up just one hit and one walk in three shutout innings on the hill, while striking out four.

Grasso paced Rhode Island College offensively with a 3-for-4 performance that featured a home run, one RBI, one stolen base and two runs scored. Carey, Costa, sophomore second baseman Tyler Collins (Cranston, RI) and senior shortstop Zach Hubbard (Kissimmee, FL) all finished with multiple hits for the Anchormen, who racked up 15 hits as a team.

The Lancers were led by Wallace, who went 3-for-5 with one RBI and one stolen base, while Ruggiero and senior second baseman Nick Gezotis (Westfield, MA) each recorded a pair of hits for Worcester State as well.

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will travel to Brandeis on Thursday, April 4 (3 p.m.).
