NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – Junior starting pitcher Chris Pyz (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) tossed a complete game on Friday, allowing just one run to lead the State University of New York at New Paltz baseball team (7-12, 4-4 SUNYAC) to a 2-1 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) victory over SUNY Oswego (10-7, 3-2 SUNYAC) at Loren Campbell Memorial Field.

Pyz threw the complete nine innings in Friday's win to improve his season record to 1-1. He allowed just four hits while striking out seven in his fourth start of the 2013 campaign.

Oswego starter Dan Erne also pitched a complete game, going eight innings for the Lakers without allowing an earned run. However, two unearned runs were scored by the Hawks on seven hits, leaving Erne with a loss on the afternoon.

The Hawks scored the first run of the game in the fourth inning on Friday. After senior first baseman Thomas Pinnola (North Babylon, N.Y./North Babylon) doubled down the left-field line to lead off the inning, junior designated hitter David Lostaglio (Milton, N.Y./Marlboro Central) hit a hard groundball at the first baseman, who took the ball off his body, allowing Lostaglio to reach base and Pinnola to score.

The Lakers responded quickly in their next turn at bat. Catcher Alex Jurczynski blasted a home run over the left field wall to lead off the inning, tying the game at one run apiece.

The Hawks quickly went back on the attack in the home half of the fifth. Junior second baseman Kenny Gentile (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst) reached base on a fielding error by the shortstop to lead off the inning. Senior center fielder Matt Carr (Westbury, N.Y./Long Island Lutheran) took advantage of the runner on base, as he smacked a double to left center, plating Gentile from first to give the Hawks the lead and eventually the win.

Carr had the only RBI for the Hawks in a 1-for-4 afternoon. Pinnola went 1-for-3 with a double, while senior catcher Matt Kaldon (Montgomery, N.Y./Valley Central) went 2-for-3.

Jurczynski's homer provided the only run for the Lakers in his 1-for-3 effort. Right fielder Michael Mascari also went 1-for-3, and center fielder Scott Buniak and third baseman Brian Hamilton each went 1-for-4 to account for the four Laker hits.

The Hawks and Lakers are set to square off again tomorrow, April 6, in a SUNYAC doubleheader. First pitch for the opener is slated for 12 p.m. from Loren Campbell Memorial Field.
