Boyertown, PA
– Tyler Gurman (Bronx, NY/Lehman)
singled in the go-ahead run with two outs in the top of the eighth
inning and Adam Krebs (Commack,
NY/Commack) came on and nailed down the save as Keystone
College defeated Neumann University 3-2 in Saturday afternoon's
Colonial States Athletic Conference baseball championship game to
give the Giants' their fifth straight CSAC title. The Giants
who are currently ranked 12 in the country and have now won 14
consecutive games, improve to 33-7 on the season and earn the
conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
Keystone third baseman Lymbel Guerrero (Lynn, MA/Lynn
Classical) was named the CSAC Championship MVP after going
5-12 with seven RBIs and two home runs in this weekend's
tournament.
After a strikeout, throw-out double play to end the top of the
first inning, Kevin Catherina (Ridgefield, NJ/St.
Mary (Rutherford)) led off the home first with a triple to
the right field wall before scoring on an RBI groundout to first by
Austin Straub (Manlius,
NY/Fayetteville-Manlius) for the game's first run.
Gurman then blasted solo home run deep over the centerfield fence
to double the Giants' lead at 2-0.
Neumann (29-13) put runners on second and third with one out in
the top of the second inning and following a strikeout by Keystone
starter Patrick Robinson (Goshen,
NY/Goshen), a hit by pitch loaded the bases for the
Knights. Robinson escaped the jam though by getting an
inning-ending flyout to left.
Will Flores reached on a leadoff walk to start the third inning,
stole second, and advanced to third on a ground. Flores then
got the Knights on the board after scoring on a throwing error by
the Giants to cut Neumann's deficit to 2-1.
The Knights tied the contest in the top of the fifth inning when
Tyler Drinkard hit a double to left field to score Flores from
second to knot the game up at 2-2-.
With a runner on second with one out in the visitor's eighth,
Adam Sosnowski (Dickson City, PA/Mid
Valley) was called on out of the bullpen and induced a pair
of groundouts to escape the treat.
Straub singled through the left side with two outs in the bottom
of the eighth inning before pinch runner Jose Garcia (Trenton,
NJ/Trenton Central) stole second to put a runner in scoring
position. Gurman then hit a 3-2 pitch past a diving Knights'
first baseman to score Garcia with the go-ahead run.
After hitting the leadoff batter, Krebs recorded a strikeout
before the Knights put runners on the corners following an error by
the Giants. Krebs then struck out the final two batters to
earn his seventh save of the season.
Robinson went 7.1 innings on the mound for Keystone, allowing four
hits and walking three while striking out six batters.
Sosnowski was credited with the win to improve to 5-0 on the season
after recording the two huge outs in the eighth inning while Krebs
notched his seventh save of the year with three strikeouts in the
ninth.
Gurman was 2-4 with a pair of RBIs and a run scored to lead
Keystone's offense.
Neumann starter Erik Klimoff (5-1) suffered his first loss of the
season after allowing three runs on seven hits and two walks while
striking out three batters while going the distance on the
mound.
Flores, Drinkard, Bill Pace, and Joey Armata accounted for the
Knights four hits on the day with Drinkard driving in Flores both
times to give Neumann their two runs on the day.
Keystone, who will learn the regional bracket fate in the NCAA
Division III Baseball Tournament on Monday, May 13th,
will host Montclair State University in a non-conference game on
Thursday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. at Christy Mathewson
Field.
