The Oglethorpe baseball team completed a three-game sweep over the visiting Curry Colonels Sunday at Anderson Field, defeating them 10-1. The win improves the Stormy Petrels to 4-2 on the season going into a couple games against archrival Emory sandwiched around the start of SAA play next weekend.
The Petrels got a brilliant pitching performance for the second straight contest, this one from sophomore Kyle Mitchell. He carried a no-hitter through 7-1/3 innings and had a shutout through 8-2/3 innings. He finished with a complete-game four-hitter, only a single run, walking three and striking out three.
Meanwhile, designated hitter Patrick Kulick continued his torrid pace of late, turning in a 2-for-3 day with a double, two runs and two stolen bases. second baseman Keith Dearden turned in a 2-for-4 day himself, recording a double and a walk to go with two runs and an RBI.
The Petrels jumped out to an early first inning lead on a couple of Curry errors. The Petrels broke it open in the third, however, as Dearden came through with an RBI single, center fielder Vernon Trice followed with a two-run double of his own, and first baseman T.J. Schmutz singled through the left side of the infield to score Trice with the inning's third run and give the Petrels a 7-0 lead.
They added on with three additional runs in the eighth, including a sacrifice fly by pinch-hitter Justin Dempsey.
The 4-2 Petrels will next take the field Tuesday afternoon when they travel across town to take on Emory at 2 p.m. They'll then return to Anderson Field next weekend to host Berry in the first SAA series of the season. The series will feature a doubleheader Saturday starting at 2 p.m. and a single game on Sunday with the first pitch also scheduled for 2 p.m.
