Sanford, Fla., March 11, 2014 – Three errors by the Washington University in St. Louis baseball team led to four unearned runs for Emory University as the Bears dropped an 8-2 decision to the Eagles Tuesday evening at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship at Sanford Memorial Stadium.
Emory jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning behind two hits and a fielding error by Washington U. The Eagles added a run in the top of the third on a two-out RBI double that made it 4-0. In the bottom of the inning, sophomore Kyle Kozak was hit by a pitch and junior Andrew Goldstick drew a walk before sophomore Max Golembo hit an infield single to load the bases. Junior Chris Lowery hit a one-out single up the middle to score Kozak and put Washington U. on the scoreboard. Senior Andrew Dwoskin drew a two-out, bases-loaded walk to score Goldstick and make it 4-2, but a fielder's choice ended the scoring threat for the Bears. Emory answered in the top of the fourth, taking advantage of an error and a pair of walks to add two unearned runs and extend its lead to 6-2.
The Bears had runners on the corners with two outs in the bottom of the fourth, but a strikeout ended the inning. Emory scored another unearned run in the top of the seventh to make it 7-2. In the bottom of the inning, Goldstick led off with a hit to left-center field, but was thrown out at second base trying to stretch it to a double. Golembo followed with a single and Lowery got a two-out single to second base, but Emory got a flyout to get out of the inning without allowing a run. A one-out walk in the top of the ninth led to another run for Emory when the batter came around to score on a wild pitch, making the score 8-2. Freshman CJ Price led off the bottom of the ninth with a pinch-hit single to center field, but Emory retired the Bears' next three batters to end the game.
Washington U. finished with nine hits in the game, but left nine runners on base, while Emory had 10 hits and also left nine base runners stranded in the game. Lowery and Golembo each had three hits on the day to lead the Bears offensively. Sophomore Chris Sanderson (0-2) took the loss after allowing four runs, three earned, on four hits and three walks in two innings of work. Four relief pitchers combined to scatter six hits over the remaining seven innings for Washington U., while allowing just one earned run.
Washington U. dropped to 3-5 overall and 2-2 in the UAA with the loss, while Emory improved to 12-6 overall and 3-1 in conference play. The Bears begin the second half of the conference tournament by facing Case Western Reserve University at 2 p.m. (ET) Wednesday. The Spartans enter Tuesday's action with an 8-1 record and are atop the UAA standings with a 3-0 record after winning three games each by one run. Case takes on Brandeis University in Tuesday's first game at 11 a.m. (ET) before facing Washington U.
Bear Notebook: It was Golembo's fifth multiple-hit game of the season for the Bears … Golembo is now 8-for-16 at the plate for the Bears in four games at the UAA Championship … Dwoskin and Golembo have both reached base safely in each of the Bears' eight games this season.
