Auburndale, Fla.-Despite a 3-for-3 effort at the dish from freshman catcher Tyler Rains (North Kingstown, RI), the Rhode Island College baseball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader against Fitchburg State on Tuesday afternoon at the 2014 RussMatt Invitational.

Rhode Island College (3-4) fell in the first game, 5-1, and dropped the second contest, 8-2. Meanwhile, Fitchburg State improves to 6-2 on the season.

In game one, senior left fielder Justin Costa (Cranston, RI) belted a one-out double in the top of the first to kick-start RIC's offensive attack and was immediately driven home following an RBI double from sophomore right fielder Matt Foley (Seekonk, MA). However, that would be the only run of the game for the Anchormen, while the Falcons tacked on a pair of runs in the both the third and fourth innings to go along with an insurance run in the fifth en route to the four-run victory.

Senior left-hander C.J. Tsoumakas (Hope, RI) struck out five batters in a complete-game effort, but was saddled with the loss (1-1).

In game two, Fitchburg State posted four runs to jump out to an early lead in the top of the first inning, but the Anchormen answered back with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second to pull within two. After ripping a single for his first hit of the game, Rains scored on a wild pitch for the first run of the frame. Junior second baseman Tyler Collins (Cranston, RI) came around to score later in the inning after reaching on a fielder's choice to make it, 4-2.

Despite a solid outing on the hill from junior right-hander Dylan Cummiskey (Warwick, RI), the Falcons eventually plated four more runs in the top of the seventh to run away with the six-run victory. Cummiskey hurled 6.1 innings in his second start of the season and fanned six batters, but was tagged with the loss (0-1).

Rains added a walk and run to help boost the Anchormen, while Costa went 1-for-3 on the afternoon and compiled four walks to go along with a double, a stolen base and a run scored.

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College faces RPI on Wednesday (11 a.m.) in its final game at the 2014 RussMatt Invitational.
