Tucson, Ariz.- A six-run second inning and a dominant pitching performance was more than enough on Saturday morning as the Wheaton baseball team wrapped up its annual spring trip with a 12-1 run-rule victory over Crown College. Wheaton closes its trip with consecutive run-rule victories, outscoring its opponents 30-6 over the 14-inning span. Evan Rahn improved to 3-0 on the season with five innings of work on the mound. Rahn allowed one run on four hits while striking out three. Wheaton wraps up its spring trip with a 6-4 overall record.
John Jensen-Johnson's two-out double in the top of the first inning staked Wheaton to a 1-0 lead that the Thunder would not relinquish. Rahn made quick work of the Storm in the home half and Wheaton wasted no time in opening its lead in the top of the second. Wheaton opened the inning with five consecutive hits and batted around with each batter reaching base with only one out being recorded. Jake Portugal's double and a triple by Johnny Peltz made it 4-0. Josh Kimmel's RBI single, an RBI fielder's choice by Justin Swider and a deep double by Trey Martin pushed the lead up to 7-0 when the dust finally settled at the end of the inning.
Martin and Peltz each finished 3-4 with three RBIs. Peltz' hits consisted of a triple and a two doubles. Michael Kaufman finished the game on the mound with two perfect innings of relief and a pair of strikeouts.
Wheaton will host its home opener on Friday night when the Thunder face St Mary's University (Minn.) at 5 PM at Lee Pfund Stadium.
