LEXINGTON, Va. - Guilford College's baseball team swept an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) doubleheader at Washington and Lee University Saturday afternoon. The Quakers (10-9, 4-2 ODAC) won the opener, 13-5, and took game two, 4-2.
A late-game offensive outburst and four Generals' errors sparked Guilford to the opening-game victory. Josh Jospehson scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the seventh inning, which gave Washington and Lee (9-6, 2-4 ODAC) a 3-2 lead. Guilford answered with five unearned runs in the top of the eighth and scored six more times in the ninth, which opened a 13-3 advantage.
Sophomore Nathan Fulbright paced the Quakers' offense with four hits, including a first-inning solo home run, and three runs scored. Herc Ingels and Michael Whited both added two hits and Whited had two runs batted in. Borja Jones-Berasaluce (2-2) yielded two earned runs and did not walk a batter in seven innings of work.
Washington and Lee's Kyle Witty was a home run shy of hitting for the cycle and finished with four of the Generals' 12 hits. Taylor Rowe had three hits and Josephson scored three runs. Reliever Andrew Lamb (0-1) took the loss, although only three of the nine runs he yielded in an inning of work were earned.
Guilford starter Drew Crawford threw eight effective frames and reliever Justin Morrison left the bases loaded in the ninth for his second save in the Quakers' 4-2 nightcap victory. Washington and Lee had three of its six hits off Crawford in the first inning, which gave the hosts a 1-0 lead. Guilford tied the game in the second inning on Whited's solo home run.
Crawford (2-2) retired 16 straight Generals between the third and eighth innings. Keegan Dolan hit a two-out, solo homer in the eighth to end the string of consecutive outs and halve the hosts' deficit. Washington and Lee loaded the bases with a single, walk and a hit batsman issued by reliever Justin Morrison in the ninth inning, but Morrison got pinch-hitter Riley Stout to ground out with the bases loaded in the ninth, which ended the game.
Tyler Petersen had run-scoring singles in the fifth and seventh innings for Guilford, including the go-ahead run with two away in the fifth. Fulbright plated Petersen in the fifth with a single. Jacob Roberts and John Macon Smith also had two hits for Guilford.
The Quakers' March 16 game with Lynchburg College has been postponed until April 10. Guilford is slated to host Tufts University Monday (3/17) at McBane Field.
