St. Thomas jumped on UW-W early in game one and went on to win 8-5 while the Warhawks flipped the script on the Tommies in game two and went on to win 7-2 to split a doubleheader in Lake Myrtle, Florida Monday. The Warhawks are 6-1 overall and have played all of their games in the sunshine state.
In game one the Tommies opened up with a run in the top of the first and continued to add to their lead as the game went on. They added two in each of the third, fourth and fifth innings and plated one more in the seventh to make it 8-0.
In their last at bat UW-W gave it all they had. The first three batters reached base and the Warhawks crept closer at 8-1. Another run scored on a ground out to make it 8-2. Three more singles and another run scored. Michael Gonzalez (Delavan/Delavan-Darien) doubled in the next at bat to plate two and make it 8-5, but the rally was stifled and the Tommies held on to win.
Colin Wendinger earned the win for St. Thomas striking out seven batters in six and two-thirds.
UW-W was first to score in game two. Kyle Haen (Madison/Edgewood) led off the first with a walk, advanced to second on a wild pitch, moved up one more on a single by Jared Fon (Germantown/Germantown), and crossed homeplate on another wild pitch to give UW-W a 1-0 lead.
In the third Fon gave UW-W a 2-0 lead when he drove in Nick Kuhlmann (Minneapolis, MN/Minneapolis Southwest) on a single to center field. Casey Power (Ontario, Canada/Belle River) scored on a Daytona Bryden (Rockton, IL/Hononegah) double in the fourth to give the Warhawks a 3-0 advantage.
Two innings later UW-W added one more to make it 4-0 when Michael Pierce homered to center field.
The Tommies battled back with a pair of runs in the sixth, but UW-W got those two back and one more in the top of the seventh. Haen drove in the first run on an infield single, Pierce belted a sacrifice fly to score one more, and Haen later came around to score on an error to make it 7-2.
Connor Hurst (Waunakee/Waunakee) earned the "W" for the Warhawks pitching six and one-third and striking out eight. Hurst boasts a 0.79 ERA in two starts this season.
Pierce led the Warhawks at the plate as he went 4-for-7 on the day with two runs and three RBIs.
UW-W will return to the diamond on Tuesday when they play Union College in a single game at Lake Myrtle #2 in Florida.
