Oglethorpe Suffers Doubleheader Sweep Against No. 15 Birmingham-Southern

The Oglethorpe baseball team endured a doubleheader sweep at the hands of No. 15 Birmingham-Southern Saturday at Anderson Field, losing Game 1, 10-0, in seven innings before dropping Game 2, 8-2, in a regularly-scheduled seven innings.

The Stormy Petrels accrued only two hits in Game 1 as they got shutout 10-0 in a game shortened by the 10-run rule. The visiting Panthers scored two in the third, then exploded for eight runs in the fifth. The Petrels were unable to scratch any runs of their own across.

Oglethorpe starter Ryan Brennan suffered the loss to drop to 1-4 on the season. He allowed six runs on 6 hits over 4-1/3 innings of work. He walked one, struck out two and allowed a pair of home runs.

In Game 2, the Petrels again fell behind the eight-ball early. They allowed four runs in the third and three in the fourth to give the Panthers a 7-0 lead. The Petrels managed five hits in Game 2, due largely to a two-run ninth inning. They picked up runs off an RBI single from right fielder Jake Purcell and a sacrifice fly from second baseman Keith Dearden.

Dan McBryan suffered the loss, allowing five earned runs on seven hits over 3-1/3 innings of work. He drops to 0-2 on the season.

With the losses, the Petrels fall to 10-16 on the season, 4-9 in SAA competition. Sunday's third game of the series has been moved up from 2 p.m. to noon in an attempt to avoid the rain forecast to enter the Atlanta area Sunday evening. It will take place on Anderson Field.
