Worcester, MA --- WPI baseball staged a four-run rally in the seventh inning, but couldn't come all they way back in a 7-4 home loss against NEWMAC foe Coast Guard. The Bears (10-15, 5-6) got hot early, putting up three runs in the first and holding on the rest of the way to send freshmanColton Cannon (Kennesaw, GA) to his third win.

Cannon tossed six scoreless innings to start the game before the Crimson and Gray finally got to him with two outs in the bottom of the seventh. Sean Kelly (Shrewsbury, MA) mashed a triple to drive in Nick Comei (Haverhill, MA), while Sean Greene (Hingham, MA) followed with a two-run homer in the next at bat.

Blake Thompson (Liberty Hill, TX) picked up a two-inning save, quelling the Boynton Hillers in the eighth and ninth innings at Worcester State's Lyons Field.

Now sitting on a three-game losing streak, WPI (14-10, 7-4 NEWMAC) will look to get back on top in the three-game weekend series when the two squads meet again Saturday down in New London, CT in a doubleheader starting at noon.

WPI reliever Sam Miraglia (Babylon, NY) entered in the fourth inning down 5-0, and pitched 5-1/3 innings, allowing just two unearned runs to keep the hosts in it.

Greene and Zach Blanchard (Warwick, RI) led the Engineers with two hits apiece. DJ Ouellette(Watertown, CT) was the only WPI player to get on base three times, reaching on a single and two walks.

Catcher Lukas Laplante (Leeds, MA) went 3 for 4 for Coast Guard, including an RBI single in the Bears three-run first.

Matt Hanks (Chesapeake, VA) made his own offense in the second, singling with one out and then later coming home on a double steal along with Mark Behne (Clifton, VA).

Coast Guard made it 5-0 in the third inning when Cory Sonnega (Shoreline, WA) had a base hit and then later came home on a ground out by Dan Sabourin (St. Paul, MN).

Hanks showed up again later in the game with an RBI single in the seventh.
