The Oglethorpe baseball team dropped the rubber game of its three-game series against Hendrix on Sunday, losing 12-5 in Conway, Ark.

Unlike in both games of Saturday's doubleheader, where the Stormy Petrels went into the late innings with a lead, they fell behind early on Sunday and were unable to recover. They fell behind 4-0 in the first as the home-standing Warriors got four runs off of Oglehthorpe starting pitcher Justin Dempsey. The Petrels fought back with a couple of runs in the second, as right fielder Joey McAlpin hit an RBI double down the right-field line and second baseman Keith Dearden drove in another run with a sacrifice fly. However, Hendrix got four more in the fourth to take an 8-2 lead.

An RBI single from catcher Hunter Riley got a run back in the sixth, but Hendrix added three more in the bottom half of the inning to extend their lead to 11-3 and all but put the game away. The Petrels did tack on a single additional run in both the seventh and eighth innings, but the damage was already done.

Dempsey suffered the loss, dropping him to 0-3 on the season. He allowed four runs on seven hits through three innings. Dearden went 2-for-3 on the day for Oglethorpe, recording a double and a sacrifice fly while scoring two runs.

The Petrels pounded out 10 hits but committed five errors, which resulted in three unearned runs.

The loss drops the team to 15-19, 5-12 in SAA play. That 5-12 mark puts them in seventh place currently. One regular season SAA series remains, as the Petrels will welcome Millsaps to Anderson Field for a three-game set next weekend. In the meantime, the Petrels will travel for two in-state non-conference tilts midweek, as they'll take on Piedmont at 7 p.m. Tuesday in Demorest before travelling to LaGrange for a 7 p.m. Wednesday game.
