Oberlin, Ohio – Junior Andrew Hutson came through with a two-out two-run single up the middle to lift the Yeomen to a 6-5 win in game one over No. 16 Case Western Reserve on Sunday afternoon. However, the Spartans bounced back to win game two 10-2.

Danny Baldocchi, Ryan Bliss and Kevin Verne all singled to load the bases as the Yeomen trailed 5-4 in the bottom of the ninth. Following a strikeout for the second out, Hutson stepped to the plate and wasted no time as he hit a sharp ground ball back up the box on the first pitch he saw to score pinch-runner Justin Cruz from third and Bliss from second for the game-winning run.

For as exciting the bottom of the ninth inning was, the top of ninth featured even more fireworks. The inning started with Spartans catcher Jordan Swisher hitting a solo home run to left field to tie the game at 4-4. However, pitcher Mike McDonald retired two of the next three hitters.

The inning would be extended on an error to put runners on the corners with two outs. It looked as if the miscue would not matter as McDonald got Antonio Damiano to hit a grounder to shortstop, but the first base umpire ruled Damiano safe on a bang-bang play to allow the go-ahead run to score. The umpire would then immediately ejected McDonald from the game for disagreeing with his decision. Senior Mattie DeDoes then entered to record the final out, limiting the damage and keeping Oberlin within striking distance to win it in the ninth.

McDonald ended up with a no-decision after tossing 8.2 innings. Of the five runs scored by the Spartans just one was earned – that being the Swisher home run. McDonald finished with 118 pitches, 86 of which were strikes. He struck out three, walked one, and had 11 fly ball outs and 11 ground ball outs.

Early defensive errors gift-wrapped the Spartans with one run in the first and two in the third to take an early 3-0 lead. Oberlin would get one back in the home-half of the inning as Bliss belted a two-out RBI triple to the gap in right center to score Baldocchi all the way from first base.

The Yeomen would even the score at 3-3 by adding a pair in the sixth. The frame started with back-to-back doubles from Blaise Dolcemaschio and Bliss. Hutson would later lift a sacrifice fly to center to plate the second run, but the Yeomen did leave the bases loaded.

Their first lead of the game finally came in the eighth as Mitch Novak ripped a clutch two-out double to left center to score Hutson.

Oberlin had 12 hits in the game with Bliss leading the way by going 3-for-5 with a double, triple, two RBIs and two runs scored. Baldocchi also had one of his best games of the season as he was 3-for-4 with a run scored.

In the nightcap the Spartans jumped on the Yeomen early, scoring three runs in each of the first two innings and never looked back as they pounded out 17 hits in the game.

Andrew Frey delivered the crushing dagger in the second inning with a towering three-run home run over the wall in left.

Oberlin got on the board in the third on an RBI single to left from Novak and would score its only other run of the game on a balk in the fifth.

The Yeomen, who are now 15-17 on the year, are scheduled to play Muskingum on Tuesday afternoon at 2 p.m.

Oberlin also finished third in the NCAC East with a record of 7-9, meaning they will travel to DePauw University, which placed second in the NCAC West at 10-6 for the all important NCAC Crossover series next weekend.
