Benedictine Sweeps #3 Concordia Chicago

LISLE, Ill. - The Benedictine University baseball team closed the regular season with a sweep of the third ranked team in the nation, Concordia University Chicago.

Benedictine cruised to a 7-1 win in the opener. Both teams used nearly every available arm through the twin bill. Benedictine opened the scoring in the bottom of the third. Mike Luschen and Tom Byrne recorded consecutive singles to open the frame before Tim Hendricks recorded a sacrifice fly. The Eagles added a run in the fourth on a Kevin Hendricks double, and collected two more in the sixth on singles from Kyle Bock and Kevin Hendricks.

Following a Concordia Chicago run in the eighth, Benedictine tacked on three to put the game away. Kevin Hendricks delivered a two-run homer in the frame and Ryan Mullin added an RBI single. Both Hendricks and Mullin were honored as part of Senior Day.

Five different pitchers appeared in the contest. Chris Jordan earned the win because of pre-determined length, improving to 5-1 with three blank frames. Mike Irgang also twirled three scoreless frames. Benedictine smacked 15 hits in the game. Kevin Hendricks finished with three, including the first two extra-base hits of the year. Hendricks also drove home four runs. Tim Hendricks, Max Oppenheimer, Kyle Bock, and Tom Byrne all produced two hits each.

Benedictine held off Concordia Chicago (31-5, 17-3) in the second contest, rallying from down 4-0 early to win 13-10. Trailing 4-0 after the visitors plated two runs in each of the first two innings. Benedictine ripped off 12 unanswered runs, beginning with a six-run second. Nick Severino opened the scoring with an RBI single. Steve Yeater picked up an RBI single to pull Benedictine within 4-2. Tim Hendricks pulled Benedictine within a run with an RBI single and the game evened itself on a wild pitch. Mullin drove a double to the left-center gap to put the Eagles ahead.

Benedictine scored in four straight frames, adding two in the third and four in the fourth to break open the contest. Concordia Chicago scored a run in the fifth and four in the sixth, clawing within 13-9. The Cougars brought the tying run to the plate in the sixth and left the tying run on base in the seventh.

Cody Netzel marked the first of six hurlers in the contest, and earned the win with two innings of work. Ryan Rickert allowed just a single tally in three frames. Dylan Smith closed out the game for his second save. Benedictine posted 10 hits in the second contest. Yeater and Tim Hendricks each tallied a pair. Eight different individuals picked up a hit.

Benedictine (22-16, 16-4) enters the NACC Tournament as the second seed. The Eagles will play fifth-seeded Dominican University at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday in the opening round of action. Concordia Wisconsin serves as the host of the tournament.
