#1 Webster Falls in NCAA First Round to DePauw, 2-1

Isaac Behme

The #1 ranked Webster University baseball team was upset in the first round of the Moline Regional, losing to #6 seed DePauw University, 2-1.  Isaac Behme pitched well in a complete game effort, but the Gorlok bats could not break through vs. DePauw starter Jack Peck.

Behme (SR, Harrisburg, IL/Harrisburg HS) allowed six hits, one walk, and two runs in nine innings of work.  He struck out seven as he took his first loss of the season, falling to 8-1.  The Gorloks had seven hits and no walks, vs. Peck, a 6'5 junior who improved to 5-2 with the win.

Webster took a 1-0 lead in the first when Corey Lasky (SR, Vernon Hills, IL/Adlai E Stevenson HS) singled, stole second, took third on a Ryan Hall (SR, Chesterfield, MO/Eureka HS) ground out, and scored on a passed ball.  Lasky wound up 2-4, with a run scored.

Depauw tied it in the sixth inning.  After two Tiger infield singles, and a throwing error put runners at first and third, a fielder's choice on a 5-4 putout scored one.  A 1-3-6 pickoff and a strikeout of the next batter by Behme ended the threat.

In the seventh, DePauw had a lead off infield single, and a sacrifice, passed ball, and single to center scored the go ahead run.  A Lasky bobble on the hit to center allowed the lead runner to take third but a throw by third baseman Hall nailed the runner trying to take second.  The Gorloks got the third out in the inning when Hall employed the "hidden ball" trick to tag out the runner at third.

The Gorloks best chance to tie came in the eighth when Jeff Kammer (JR, Chesterfield, MO/Lafayette HS) singled and took second on a Charlie Gandolfi (JR, Mundelein, IL/Mundelein HS) sac bunt.  Kevin Kojs (SR, New Lenox, IL/Lincoln Way Central HS) line drive bid for a hit was snagged by the Tiger shortstop, who relayed to second to double up Kammer.

Webster's seven game win streak comes to an end as they fall to 37-6.  The Gorloks fall into the loser's bracket, and will play at noon on May 15 vs. the loser of the Rose-Hulman (IN)/St. Thomas (MN) game.  The Gorloks, the reigning Moline Champs after winning in 2013, now have no room for error after the loss.

This is the third time Webster has played in the Moline Regional, hosted by Augustana College, playing there in 2010 also.
