Warhawks Advance to NCAA Regional Championship

It was the same formula, just a different day.  For the third day in a row the Warhawk baseball team used solid pitching and timely hitting to win and remain undefeated in the NCAA DIII Midwest Regional in Whitewater.  This time the Adrian Bulldogs were the victim.  UW-W scored four runs late to go on to win 6-2.  The Warhawks, 39-7, advance to the championship game on Saturday with a trip to the World Series in Appleton, Wisconsin on the line.  Their opponent will be the winner of Friday's 6 pm game.  The tournament uses a double-elimination format which means Adrian, 32-14, stays alive and will play again at 6 pm in an elimination game.

The Bulldogs scored first in the top of the second on a single to center.  UW-W retaliated in the bottom of the inning scoring one on a sacrifice fly by Trey Cannon (Palatine, IL/Palatine).

Adrian took the lead again in the top of the third scoring a single run on a double by centerfielder Sam Fischer.  Their lead was short lived as UW-W again responded with a run in the bottom of the frame.  Adam Gregory (Edgerton/Edgerton) snuck past home plate on a wild pitch to tie the score at two.

Starter Curtis Morgan (Green Lake/Green Lake) then settled in and went to work holding the Bulldogs hitless for the next four innings.

Meanwhile UW-W took the lead in the sixth on a Mike Mierow (Brookfield/Central) single to left field.  Mikole Pierce (DePere/DePere) added an insurance run in the seventh by singling up the middle to plate Dylan Bersch (Pulaski/Pulaski), and Jared Fon (Germantown/Germantown) added two more on a two-out, two-on pinch hit single through the right side.

Colin Grove (Beloit/Memorial) and Austin Jones (Wauwatosa/Wauwatosa West) did the rest, holding Adrian to two hits the rest of the way.

Morgan scattered six hits and two runs while striking out three to earn the win and improve to 6-1 this season.

Six different Warhawks stole a base in the game.  Trey Cannon (Palatine, IL/Palatine) went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI to lead UW-W at the plate.

Following the game Chancellor Richard Telfer and Provost Beverly Kopper held a small graduation ceremony for the four Warhawks that will miss graduation Saturday to play in the championship game.  Michael Gonzalez (Delavan/Delavan-Darien), Brock Liston (Darien, IL/Joliet Catholic), Justin Mortensen (Hartland/Arrowhead), and Scott Plaza (Arlington Heights, IL/Prospect) all received their diplomas and handshakes in a small ceremony at Prucha Field.

The Warhawks will have two opportunities to win on Saturday.  Their opponent will have one loss and will need to defeat UW-W twice to advance.  The first championship game is scheduled for noon.  The second championship game, if necessary, is slated for 3 pm.  UW-W is looking to advance to the World Series for the sixth time in program history.
