After several cancellations due to weather, the Millikin baseball team finally opened its season with a 12-3 win over Monmouth College in Fort Myers, Florida on March 10.
Millikin rallied from a 3-0 deficit after two and half innings to secure the victory.
The Big Blue scored two runs in the third, one in the fourth, two in the fifth, two in the sixth and five runs in the eighth inning.
Millikin pounded out 11 hits and took advantage of seven Monmouth errors.
Freshman shortstop Seth Coffey and freshman catcher Luke Azzarelli each had two hits for the Big Blue. Cody Blunk drove home two runs. Leadoff man Keith Askins was 1-3 with a walk, one RBI, two stolen bases and scored three runs. Other Big Blue players with RBIs were Brian Ekiss, Connor Shaw, Erik Schurtz, Frank Barnes and Julian Gutierrez.
Kyle Davidson picked up the win in relief of starter Sean Beal. Davidson threw four innings allowing only two hits and no runs while striking out five. Ben Peters pitched two scoreless innings in relief.
Austin Hardy led Monmouth going 3-4 with an RBI.
Millikin will play St. Joseph's College-Long Island at 12 p.m. ET on Wednesday.
