Late Homer Leads Ferrum to 7-6 Comeback Victory over LC

FERRUM, VA – Sophomore Lane Deaver tied up the game in the ninth inning on a home run to set the table for Ferrum College to win 7-6 in 10 innings over the Lynchburg College baseball team Tuesday.

Deaver's Panthers had trailed since the third inning but scored four unanswered runs, including single tallies in the fifth and eighth innings to get the score within one, 6-5, heading to the ninth.

Lynchburg reliever Charlie Thieringer entered in the eighth frame with a run already in and two Panthers on base, but induced a popup to end the Ferrum threat.

Deaver greeted Thieringer harshly to lead off the bottom of the ninth as the lefty drove a pitch deep to the opposite field for a solo shot to knot the contest at six.

Ferrum won the game in the 10th inning when Trey Hamlett doubled to right-center, moved up to third on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a single by Clay Massie.

Lynchburg got on the board first as Drew Taylor continued his torrid start with a leadoff double to left. Lincoln Evans and Joe Rogers followed with walks to load the bases for Jonathan Munn. The sophomore transfer increased his team lead in RBI, driving in Taylor and Evans on a single to center.

Ferrum starter Easton Riggs then forced a fielder's choice but control forced a call to the bullpen after a hit by pitch of Rob Tomasulo loaded the bases yet again. Ian Gordon got the next two Hornets out to end the top of the frame.

Lynchburg ran into similar issues, forced to go to the 'pen in the first frame after Kyle Hall and Deaver sandwiched a Massie walk with singles to load the bags. A sacrifice fly, RBI single from Nathan Reynolds and a wild pitch all plated runs for the 3-2 Ferrum lead before LC went to David Goulding in relief.

Goulding was solid for Lynchburg, surrendering a lone run on four hits and one walk in 4 2/3 innings while tallying a pair of strikeouts.

Hamlett (1-0) picked up the win for Ferrum (9-7) with two hitless innings of relief. He also joined Deaver as the only Ferrum batters with three hits on the afternoon.

Tomasulo provided the fireworks for the Hornets, breaking a 3-3 tie in the third with a two-run blast to right, his first of the season. Taylor finished 3-for-6 on the day with a run scored and an RBI.

Lynchburg (3-7) hosts Greensboro College (5-7) in a non-conference tilt Thursday at 3 p.m.
